Close to three hundred stores and supermarkets were looted during week-long food riots in Argentina in December 2001. Thirty-four people were reported dead and hundreds were injured. Among the looting crowds, activists from the Peronist party (the main political party in the country) were quite prominent. During the lootings, police officers were conspicuously absent - particularly when small stores were sacked. Through a combination of archival research, statistical analysis, multi-sited fieldwork, and taking heed of the perspective of contentious politics, this book provides an analytic description of the origins, course, meanings, and outcomes of the December 2001 wave of lootings in Argentina.

This open access book looks at the migration of Southern European EU citizens (from Portugal, Spain, Italy, Greece) who move to Northern European Member States (Belgium, France, Germany, United Kingdom) in response to the global economic crisis. Its objective is twofold. First, it identifies the scale and nature of this new Southern European emigration and examines these migrants’ socio-economic integration in Northern European destination countries. This is achieved through an analysis of the most recent data on flows and profiles of this new labour force using sending-country and receiving-country databases. Second, it looks at the politics and policies of immigration, both from the perspective of the sending- and receiving-countries. Analysing the policies and debates about these new flows in the home and host countries’ this book shows how contentious the issue of intra-EU mobility has recently become in the context of the crisis when the right for EU citizens to move within the EU had previously not been questioned for decades. Overall, the strength of this edited volume is that it compiles in a systematic way quantitative and qualitative analysis of these renewed Southern European migration flows and draws the lessons from this changing climate on EU migration.

Los atentados del 11 de marzo de 2004 no sólo esparcieron la crudeza de un escenario social en que cualquiera puede sentir que matar es una opción para conseguir sus propios ntereses. También fueron el punto de partida de una insólita experiencia de desvictimización: la “Red Ciudadana tras el 11-M”, un espacio de relaciones, por momentos invisible, dnde se cruzaron distintas elaboraciones sobre el hecho de qué significa ser víctima de terrorismo. Como tristemente sabemos, la realidad de un país no es la misma con víctimas que sin ellas. La existencia de víctimas permite el despliegue de políticas de gestión que, de la mano de determinadas formas de asistencia, van revictimizando una y otra vez. Pero la victimización no es una fatalidad, no es la consecuencia natural e irremediable del terrorismo o de otras manifestaciones de la violencia política. Otros recorridos son posibles. Este libro aporta una visión desde lo colectivo informal sobre cómo personas directamente afectadas por los atentados se embarcaron en un proceso, activo y crítico, de recuperación de su autonomía. Y cuenta, en primera persona, cómo esta experiencia conecta con un sinfín de problemas contemporáneos, existenciales y políticos que siguen hablando al presente, a pesar de que el 11-M no sea ya titular en las portadas.
