El reconocimiento como Ciudad Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la UNESCO es un privilegio del que gozan solo unas cuantas urbes españolas: Alcalá de Henares, Ávila, Cáceres, Córdoba, Cuenca, Ibiza, Mérida, Salamanca, San Cristobal de la Laguna, Santiago de Compostela, Segovia, Tarragona y Toledo. Este reconocimiento internacional supone un honor y, al mismo tiempo, un a distinción que ha posicionado a estos destinos turísticos en lugares de primer orden a todos los niveles.Precisamente los avances que, en los utlimos años, se han experimentado en el ámbito del turismo, tanto desde el punto de vista de la oferta como a nivel de la demanda, están poniendo de manifiesto nuevas necesidades y, al mismo tiempo, revelan una exigencia de los gestores implicados en actividades turísticas en aras a la adopción de nuevos planteamientos y estrategias, especialmente en los detsinos declarados Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la UNESCo. Dentro de este planteamiento, el importante desarrollo experimentado en los últimos años por el denominado turismo cultural constituye un fenómeno de especial interés y una magnífica oportunidad de desarrollo, singularmente para aquellos teriritoios y ciudades con unos recursos patrimoniales y culturales tradicionalmente poco explotados como posibles recursos turísticos. Por ello, este libro representa un marco de reflexión a partir del cual poder extraer las estrategias de actuación y herramientas de gestión que permintan, tanto a instituciones públicas como a empresas, aprovechar al máximo las posibilidades que ofrece este ámbito turístico.
