What is truly real? Rudolf Steiner sheds light on everyday reality through spiritual knowledge, repeatedly urging us to bring anthroposophy into daily human existence. Indagando, vendo e observando, tentando compreender muitas vezes o que lhe parecia incompreensível, anotava cada fato vivido ou presenciado que tivesse relação com o Brasil, colhido ainda palpitante na realidade de cada dia. Essa, a origem dos estudos reunidos em Made in Africa. Como esclarece no prefácio, o livro reúne indagações para "um processo autenticador de elementos africanos que permanecem no Brasil e motivos brasileiros que vivem n'África, modificados, ampliados, assimilados, mas ainda identificáveis e autênticos", muitos deles levados por ex-escravos de torna viagem. As afinidades estão nos mais insuspeitos gestos e posturas do cotidiano, do andar rebolado, cuja origem mestre Cascudo identifica no bamboleio da angolana, à prática deleitosa do cafuné, também de origem banto; em múltiplos aspectos da cozinha brasileira, podendo começar pela nossa farofa, idêntica à angolana, e de nossas danças, o escandaloso lundu, contra o qual os moralistas tanto protestavam, e a umbigada, de extrema sensualidade, espécie de rápido mimetismo do ato sexual. Do continente negro também vieram crendices, entidades mágicas e temores que ainda povoam a alma do nosso povo, como o zumbi, de presença tão assustadora no norte do país, os orixás, a crença em determinados amuletos, como a pata do coelho. Mama África continua muito viva no cotidiano do brasileiro.
