Euripides (c. 480 - c. 406 BC) was a tragedian of classical Athens. Along with Aeschylus and Sophocles, he is one of the three ancient Greek tragedians for whom any plays have survived in full. Some ancient scholars attributed ninety-five plays to him, but the Suda says it was ninety-two at most. Of these, eighteen or nineteen have survived more or less complete (Rhesus is suspect). There are many fragments (some substantial) of most of his other plays. More of his plays have survived intact than those of Aeschylus and Sophocles together, partly because his popularity grew as theirs declined-he became, in the Hellenistic Age, a cornerstone of ancient literary education, along with Homer, Demosthenes, and Menander.

Euripides' Iphigeneia among the Taurians has been a popular and influential text from antiquity onwards. Excerpt from The Iphigenia in Tauris: Of Euripides Tbs iphigenia in Tauris is not in the modem sense a tragedy; it is a romantic play, beginning in a tragic atmosphere and moving through perils and escapes to a happy end. To the archaeologist the cause of this lies in the ritual on which the play is based. All Greek tragedies that we know have as their nucleus something which the Greeks called an Aition - a cause or origin. They all explain some ritual or observance or commemorate some great event. Nearly all, as a matter of fact, have for this Aition a Tomb Ritual, as, for instance, the Hippolytus has the worship paid by the Trozenian Maidens at that hero's grave. The use of this Tomb Ritual may well explain both the intense shadow of death that normally hangs over the Greek tragedies and also perhaps the feeling of the Fatality, which is, rightly or wrongly, supposed to be prominent in them. For if you are actually engaged in commemorating your hero's funeral, it follows that all through the story, however bright his prospects may seem, you feel that he is bound to die; he cannot escape. How should a literary scholar approach a text characterized not by stability but by variation and flux? This book offers a radical new perspective on the limits--and the accomplishments--of the modern traditions of textual criticism in classics.Sean Alexander Gurd takes as his starting point the case of a single Greek tragedy by Euripides, one of his last. According to ancient accounts, the Iphigenia at Aulis was produced at the city Dionysia, the great festival of Athenian tragedy, sometime after Euripides died (between 407 and 405 BCE). Whether the text performed then was entirely the work of Euripides, and whether the version that appears in the manuscripts reflects either that performance or its defunct author's design, are unknown. But since the mid-eighteenth-century the mysteries and conflicting evidence concerning Iphigenia at Aulis have given rise to an array of different attempts to reconstruct the original, and every generation has seen a version of the play that is radically different from those that came before. Gurd pioneers a literary philology comfortable with this textual multiplicity, capable of reading Iphigenias at Aulis in the plural.Regarding the dossier of successive editions of Iphigenia at Aulis as a symbol for the condition of modern textual reason, Gurd shows lovers of classical literature exactly how contingent the texts they read really are.

Two versions of Euripides' masterpiece in a new verse translation by Andy Hinds, with Martine Cuypers. The first version of Iphigenia in Aulis in this volume is a translation of the complete text as it has come down to us via the only surviving manuscript – a highly corrupt text containing numerous interpolations by hands other than Euripides. The second, shorter version offers a tried and tested, more performable 'stage' version of the play. The translation is the result of a close collaboration between theatre director and playwright, Andy Hinds (author of Acting Shakespeare's Language), and Classics scholar, Dr. Martine Cuypers (Trinity College, Dublin). Whilst preserving a scholarly fidelity to the original Greek, the translation is written in a clear and energetic verse, designed to be as 'performable' in the theatre, as it is 'readable' in the home or study. It will be of equal interest and use, therefore, to teachers, students and academics, to actors and directors, and to the general reader. Companion Volume Iphigenia in Aulis is released as a companion volume to Hinds' translation of The Oresteia. Iphigenia represents Euripides' version of a key episode in the great saga, The Fall of the House of Atreus, while The Oresteia relates Aeschylus' version of the continuation and conclusion of the saga.
