Excerpt from The Complete Mountaineer About two years ago the publishers thought it desirable that mountaineering should be brought into line with our other national sports. In other words, they decided to publish a work entitled, "The Complete Mountaineer," uniform with their other well-known "Complete Series." This accounts for the apparently presumptuous title of this book, and the author craves pardon for what his brother climbers might well describe as an impossible pitch. No one is aware of the difficulty and resultant shortcomings of the undertaking more than the author; but he feels that the outcome of his personal experience, both in technical matters and on the mountains themselves, may prove of service and interest to the largely increasing public who find their greatest pleasure in the high places of the earth. In the technical sections no lengthy attempt has been made to explain or teach details that can only be learnt in actual practice on the mountains, and in charge of more or less experienced friends. When dealing with the various districts, the author has, for the most part, so arranged the information culled from his own actual expeditions, that each chapter may prove useful to those who are making a first visit to the regions dealt with. As far as possible, second-hand opinions, which in mountaineering are notoriously contradictory and conflicting, have been avoided, and the actual personal experiences of a somewhat strenuous climbing career form the bulk of the book. The ways of some modern mountaineers and the regrettable results of their thoughtlessness make it necessary that a note of warning should be sounded. * Paul Petzoldt was a pioneering North American climber and founder of the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) * Details an adventurous, wild, and long life * Drawn from 30 years of personal association and extensive interviews There are old climbers and there are bold climbers, but there are no old, bold climbers. This familiar saying, coined by legendary climber Paul Petzoldt, is one he lived to disprove. When he passed away at the age of 91, Petzoldt's career was marked by decades of achievement in climbing, incomparable passion for outdoor education, wanderlust, and a relentless drive for adventure. Petzoldt's name is synonymous with the Grand Tetons and NOLS, the highly respected outdoor school that he founded. Blazing the trail for an international code of wilderness ethics and safe climbing techniques, Petzoldt devised the voice signaling system that begins with On belay! Robert Roper's Fatal Mountaineer is a gripping look at Willi Unsoeld and the epic climbs that defined him--a classic narrative blending action with ethics, fame with tragedy, a man's ambition with a father's anguish. In 1963, Willi Unsoeld became an international hero for his conquest of the West Ridge of Everest. A charismatic professor of philosophy, Unsoeld was one of the greatest climbers of the twentieth century, a man whose raw physical power and casual fearlessness inspired a generation of adventurers. In 1976, during an expedition to Nanda Devi, the tallest peak in India, Unsoeld's philosophy of spiritual growth through mortal risk was tragically tested. The outcome of that expedition continues to fuel one of the most fascinating debates in mountaineering history.

The Making Of A Rescuer written by Nicholas Campbell Corff and has been published by Trafford Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-11-26 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

This is a book about the making of a hero - a rescuer. There are few of us that can claim to be bigger-than-life heroes, but surely the story of Dr. Otto Trotts life is the story of one of these. Because of his existence many lives have been saved or improved, human suffering has been reduced, and the world is a better place. What greater statement can be made about a person? A hiker sees the beautiful blue of a mountain gentian just off the trail and stops to capture the image through a snapshot, but in seeking a slightly wider angle steps back -- in a flash the hiker lies injured amid the rocks. A snowboarder searches for untouched powder snow, but finds a cliff instead. A small plane has engine trouble and glides steeply toward a mountain meadow. An early snowstorm catches two climbers exposed in the high alpine. An avalanche buries a foolish snowmobiler trying to make the highest mark on the side of snow-covered slope. An older gentleman has a heart attack far from his city hospital. Its quite possible and even probable that what all of the above have in common is Dr. Otto Trott. He co-founded the search and rescue organization that seeks out the injured and carries them down from the mountains, he pioneered the medical treatments that will be used for hypothermia and frostbite, he introduced advanced European methods of climbing as well as the identification of avalanche danger areas and the systematic search for and rescue of accident victims. Most importantly, Otto taught generations of others to follow in his footsteps. As Lou Whittaker, the renowned mountain guide states, This book is a must for anyone who seeks the mountains and their reward. Dee Molenaar the acclaimed mountaineer, artist and writer, says that this treatise is long overdue, while the legendary high altitude premier climber Jim Wickwire writes that Nicholas Corff has brought to life the fascinating story of Otto Trott There is no question that Dr. Otto Trott was one of those few men who was a legend in his own time, but he always remained a man of great empathy as well as skill who sought to relieve suffering, improve the safety of the outdoors and protect the mountain environment he so loved. In his long and adventuresome life he overcame great loss with courage and perseverance, and ultimately was the recipient of many awards including the Jefferson Award. Along with the text there are over 250 full page photos and illustrations.
