Este livro traz contribuições para a linguística em geral e, em particular, para a linguística funcionalista norte-americana, que, hoje, com os aportes advindos das ciências cognitivas, ganha o rótulo de Linguística Centrada no Uso (LCU), cunhado por Mário Martelotta em seu último livro. Os autores explicam a LCU, que parte do princípio de que há uma simbiose entre discurso e gramática, que interagem e se influenciam mutuamente. Segundo a LCU, o sistema linguístico do falante é fundamentalmente baseado em eventos de uso e estruturado a partir de processos cognitivos gerais. A língua é vista como um sistema adaptativo complexo na medida em que exibe variação e gradiência. Como há gradiência, não há fronteiras nítidas entre as categorias linguísticas, assim como não há uma fronteira entre léxico e gramática. A obra contribui ainda para o entendimento da formação de construções e seu espraiamento em termos de frequência de uso, como: a gramaticalização em a gente no português do Brasil e de Portugal a trajetória dos usos mais gramaticalizados de pois e pois que os usos de marcadores entende? sabe? e não tem? empregos estratégicos de marcadores discursivos, como morô? firmeza?, tá ligado? e a mudança categorial da partícula hóti no grego antigo. Linguística centrada no uso: uma homenagem a Mário Martelotta reúne trabalhos de pesquisadores brasileiros que fizeram parcerias com o Professor Martelotta em diferentes momentos de sua trajetória universitária, apresentando uma base teórica ou metodológica em comum.
