Una parte significativa de los especialistas hoy en día opina que el franquismo tuvo, en el momento de su fundación, la voluntad y la capacidad de establecer un orden afín y acorde con el del fascismo, tanto ideológico como institucionalmente. Para sobrevivir a la caída de los fascismos y adaptarse al nuevo contexto internacional tras la Segunda Guerra Mundial, el régimen realizó periódicamente distintas operaciones de "maquillaje" para reafirmar la distancia con el fascismo. El verdadero punto de la cuestión es que el mito del Caudillo no ha tenido hasta ahora la suficiente atención como para valorar su funcionalidad política. He aquí una de las razones por las que el imaginario colectivo actual tiende a retener la figura de un anciano enfermo con una voz cada vez más sutil y alta, una figura que puede suscitar varios tipos de sentimientos, pero ya no miedo o autoridad. Este libro pretende mostrar el proceso a través del cual Franco fue "inventado" como Caudillo, explicando las distintas variables políticas y sociales que participaron en el mismo y recomponiendo el mosaico de su imagen mitificada.
