The book provides a comprehensive view on the internal life of parties and investigates the dynamics of intra-party politics in different party environments to explain in which circumstances the party leader is more or less bound by the wills of party factions. Analyzing almost 500 intra-party documents from Italy, Germany and France, it presents a theory of intra-party politics that illuminates internal decision-making processes and sheds light on the outcomes of factional conflicts on the allocation of payoffs within the party, on the risk of a party split and on the survival of the party leader. Using text analysis, the results show that consensual dynamics can allow to preserve party unity and that directly elected leaders can exploit their larger autonomy either to reward followers or to prevent splits. Ma, insieme, i meccanismi di controllo esercitati dal Partito comunista sulla vita personale, la doppiezza della morale imposta, l'uso politico dei sentimenti, il tentativo di destreggiarsi fra una pedagogia politica che ha il compito di forgiare il militante secondo i dogmi dell'onestà morale proletaria e una prassi censoria che punisce i trasgressori. Quando l'impegno comune nell'antifascismo si affievolisce e il piacere della libertà di azione prende il posto delle privazioni, anche i comunisti aprono varchi all'interno di una rigidità morale spesso più propagandata che reale. Le unioni ‘irregolari' diventano un problema e finiscono davanti alla Commissione centrale di controllo. Ma si discute anche in Segreteria e in Direzione: «Vìola il costume del partito», tuona Togliatti, accusando Teresa Noce che denuncia l'abbandono del marito Luigi Longo sulle pagine del ‘borghese' "Corriere della Sera". Conoscere questi amori e seguirne le storie significa entrare nelle pieghe della cultura comunista che da un lato ha promosso valori inflessibili e dall'altro ha consentito situazioni opposte, pesando in modo diverso il giudizio fra élite dirigente e iscritti, fra uomini e donne.

Rappresentare con verità storica, anche scomoda ai potenti di turno, la realtà contemporanea, rapportandola al passato e proiettandola al futuro. Per non reiterare vecchi errori. Perché la massa dimentica o non conosce. Denuncio i difetti e caldeggio i pregi italici. Perché non abbiamo orgoglio e dignità per migliorarci e perché non sappiamo apprezzare, tutelare e promuovere quello che abbiamo ereditato dai nostri avi. Insomma, siamo bravi a farci del male e qualcuno deve pur essere diverso!
