Este libro aborda la tensa relación entre la política y la estética en la Cuba posterior a 1959. Estudia un conjunto de materiales diversos –la doctrina guevarista sobre la guerra de guerrillas y el hombre nuevo; ensayos y crónicas de intelectuales extranjeros que visitaron la isla en los años sesenta; la “novela policial revolucionaria”, principal contribución cubana al realismo socialista, y finalmente la ruina habanera, motivo central de la narrativa y la fotografía del “período especial”– como manifestaciones de lo que Alain Badiou ha llamado “pasión de lo real”, esa paradoja definitoria del novecientos en que la voluntad de trascender la representación termina produciendo nuevos simulacros. En todos los períodos de la larga era revolucionaria –los utópicos sesenta, los soviéticos setenta y ochenta, y finalmente el momento post-comunista que dura ya más de dos décadas– el autor rastrea cómo esta pasión por lo real desemboca fatalmente en espectáculo revolucionario. Esta paradoja subyace a las “dialécticas de la revolución”, en tanto se pasa del pueblo como sujeto de la política al pueblo como objeto de la política, del instantáneo evento revolucionario al interminable régimen revolucionario, de la politización del arte a la estetización de la política. Situar la Revolución cubana en el gran contexto histórico al que pertenece –ese siglo marcado por el deseo radical de superar la separación del arte y la política propia de la sociedad burguesa– permite echar luz no sólo sobre el arte revolucionario en Cuba socialista, sino también sobre la revolución misma como obra de arte. Ella, que pretendía superar, junto con el mercado, el tipo de alienación que la tradición marxista ha llamado reificación o espectáculo, se convierte en mercancía y puesta en escena, especie de artefacto producido y consumido en un círculo vicioso. Por esta cooptación de la fuerza de las masas en dictadura revolucionaria, la revolución cubana resulta, como la francesa y la rusa, una revolución congelada. Pero también lo es en un segundo sentido, el que comportan sus paradójicos efectos conservadores, particularmente manifiestos tras la caída del muro de Berlín. Allí donde, forzando el libreto pautado por la propia Unión Soviética, una vez se pretendió construir simultáneamente el socialismo y el comunismo, viejos edificios y carros americanos nos devuelven a los años anteriores al parteaguas de 1959. Es justo la pasión de lo real, ese radicalismo que en los sesenta se manifestó en la voluntad de abolir por igual el mercado capitalista y la autonomía burguesa del arte, lo que desemboca en la profunda melancolía de unas ruinas “artizadas”, auráticas, tan fotogénicas como las propias multitudes enardecidas de 1959 y 1960. La ruina habanera no tipifica, entonces, el momento posterior a la revolución, sino que viene a ser, en otra peripecia dialéctica, la revolución misma. Revolución no traicionada, sino más bien congelada, que aún no termina.
