La dynamique de la formation des jeunes nations, correspond à des cheminements diversifiés. L'auteur relève, d'une part, les fondements de la formation de la conscience nationale congolaise dans l'expérience historique commune et la communauté de vie économique et culturelle des ethnies congolaises et, d'autre part, les entraves à cette formation, que constituent l'hétérogénéité ethnique, les disparités économico-sociales et la dépendance économique et culturelle du Congo. Une analyse du contenu de la littérature congolaise repère l'expression culturelle de ces facteurs. L'enseignement, instrument à la fois d'intégration nationale et de dépendance culturelle, est - simultanément - facteur de prise de conscience et moyen d'aliénation, instigateur d'évolution et obstacle au changement, moteur et objet de transformations socioculturelles. Une étude de différents aspects de l'enseignement congolais permet d'appréhender le rôle ambigu qu'il joue dans le processus de formation de la conscience nationale. Au terme de cette étude, l'auteur conclut que la formation de la conscience nationale congolaise est en cours. Cependant, elle chemine, ainsi que la formation de la nation congolaise, à travers les contradictions qui caractérisent le jeune État du Congo, et qui sont reflétées dans son système d'enseignement.
