EditorialCe numéro est le fruit des XXIIes Rencontres nationales de patristique qui, après s’être longtemps tenues à Carcassonne, ont eu lieu pour la première fois à Toulouse, du 30 juin au 2 juillet 2012, sous l’égide commune de l’Institut catholique de Toulouse et de l’Université du Mirail. Nous remercions leurs organisateurs, Daniel Vigne et Régis Courtray, qui, par leurs efforts, ont permis le succès de cet événement rassemblant près de 150 personnes. Ils nous ont proposé de publier les Actes de ce colloque en deux numéros de Connaissance des Pères : l’un consacré au thème de l’image de Dieu chez les Pères latins, l’autre au même thème chez les Pères grecs. Nous le faisons avec joie, à la fois en fonction de l’apport scientifique de ce colloque, mais aussi en raison du thème qui est central chez les Pères et qui est toujours parlant aujourd’hui. Héritage commun du judaïsme et du christianisme, la création de l’être humain à l’image de Dieu lui confère sa dignité. Les Pères essaient de situer l’image de Dieu dans l’être humain, de montrer son sens, envisagent pour certains le passage de l’image à la ressemblance... En tant qu’évêques des premiers siècles, préparant les catéchumènes au baptême, ils donnent une place centrale à la création de l’être humain à l’image de Dieu pour expliquer le passage de la création à la création nouvelle, par la médiation du Christ qui est l’Image par excellence. Dans un premier temps, Paul Mattei présente la question dans la première littérature latine chrétienne, puis Régis Courtray propose un contrepoint intéressant avec la péricope de Matthieu 22, 15-16a qui l’amène à envisager le rapport entre l’exégèse littérale et l’exégèse allégorique et à préciser comment les Pères approfondissent le thème de l’image et sa nature. Compte tenu de son importance chez Tertullien, Jeannine Siat le reprend et montre comment Tertullien illustre, à sa manière et sans le savoir, la célèbre formule d’Irénée : « La gloire de Dieu, c’est l’homme vivant. » Il n’était pas possible d’envisager la question de l’homme, image de Dieu dans la patristique latine, sans étudier Augustin qui a apporté, avec sa réflexion sur la question, une contribution majeure à l’anthropologie et à la sotériologie. Aussi y a-t-il deux articles, consacrés à l’évêque d’Hippone : celui de Jérôme Lagouanère et le nôtre. Nous avons montré comment Augustin découvre le sens de la création de l’être humain, CPE n° 128, décembre 2012, à l’image de Dieu, ce qui l’amène à dégager son enjeu et sa dynamique. Jérôme Lagouanère envisage la question à partir de l’intériorité par une étude approfondie du De Trinitate.\nCe premier volet de l’étude de l’image de Dieu en l’homme apporte déjà une contribution substantielle qu’il est possible d’actualiser, en fonction de la place de la liberté, de la relation à Dieu et aux autres, de l’intersubjectivité...
