Esta obra efectúa un original y novedoso examen del cambio dinástico acaecido en España en 1700, desde la perspectiva de las relaciones del nuevo rey, Felipe V, con las viejas estructuras de la Monarquía Hispánica. Santos Manuel Coronas González analiza los itinerarios del soberano y su consorte, María Luisa de Saboya, en el territorio peninsular, con el objeto de proceder a los juramentos de las Leyes, Fueros y Privilegios de las coronas de Castilla y Aragón, Navarra y Territorios Forales, en lo que parecía un propósito de mantenimiento de la estructura federativa heredada de la Casa de Austria. El detallado apéndice documental reproduce el ceremonial de los juramentos, que tenía un significado que iba más allá de lo meramente protocolario. Los avatares de la Guerra de Sucesión impactaron en estas previsiones iniciales por lo que se refiere a la Corona de Aragón pero, en esencia, el sentido último de los juramentos se mantuvo hasta el final del Antiguo Régimen, cuando el Estado liberal impuso la idea de la Soberanía Nacional como superación de las antiguas distinciones entre los territorios españoles.
