A fresh look at the earliest Christian movement reveals what made the new faith so compelling...and what we need to change today to make it so again. Once upon a time there was a version of the Christian faith that was practically irresistible. After all, what could be more so than the gospel that Jesus ushered in? Why, then, isn't it the same with Christianity today? Author and pastor Andy Stanley is deeply concerned with the present-day church and its future. He believes that many of the solutions to our issues can be found by investigating our roots. In Irresistible, Andy chronicles what made the early Jesus Movement so compelling, resilient, and irresistible by answering these questions: What did first-century Christians know that we don't—about God's Word, about their lives, about love? What did they do that we're not doing? What makes Christianity so resistible in today's culture? What needs to change in order to repeat the growth our faith had at its beginning? Many people who leave or disparage the faith cite reasons that have less to do with Jesus than with the conduct of his followers. It's time to hit pause and consider the faith modeled by our first-century brothers and sisters who had no official Bible, no status, and little chance of survival. It's time to embrace the version of faith that initiated—against all human odds—a chain of events resulting in the most significant and extensive cultural transformation the world has ever seen. This is a version of Christianity we must remember and re-embrace if we want to be salt and light in an increasingly savorless and dark world.

The interaction between exegesis and dogmatics in the volume reveals the potential and relevance of this biblical motif. It proves to be vital in building bridges between God’s revelation in the past and the actual question of how to live with him today.

Join us as we explore the historic understanding of Covenant and show how this understanding can be used to build the deepest and most powerful relationship with God. What kind of relationship did Jesus intend when He offered a New Covenant relationship? How is a Covenant relationship different from all others? In our day we have lost this understanding. We view covenant as a kind of contract intended to define --or confine--our behavior. Or, we believe our relationship can be whatever we want it to be. Instead, Covenant is a very specific thing. As we enter a Covenant, our identity changes. We are joined to another in a bond of shared identity. The model for this is the Trinity, three distinct beings joined by a common nature and identity. Covenant does not just connect, it transforms. But building our new, transformed life--now connected to God in the most intimate way--is a process with many steps. Much is required of us in this process. God's plan is detailed in Scripture, but is also inherent in the nature of the relationship itself. Covenant is truly the heart of God's plan for our life, and for all of humanity.

The final hours of Christ's pre-Calvary life focused on the themes of a new Passover, a new Kingdom and a New Covenant. This New Covenant stands in stark distinction to the Covenant enjoyed by the saints of the Old Testament. It is said to be 'new' and 'better' and 'more glorious' but for many its uniqueness has become uncertain. It is frequently described in contrast to the older Covenant; the writer to the Hebrews does this, as does Paul, as did Christ. Perhaps its determining feature can be expressed in the contrast implied in the statement; ...but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. John 14:17 NKJV The conscious reception of the indwelling Spirit is the point of entrance into this New Covenant. This receiving of the Spirit effects the work of regeneration and fulfils the promises of the New Covenant made by Jeremiah and Ezekiel in which they see a new and different covenant in which old things would pass away and all things become new. This powerful regeneration/baptism in Spirit takes a man out of Adam and puts him into Christ thereby creating a 'new man' with new powers and instincts. This book explores the salvation history of the Bible, examining the background to the promise of the New Covenant as introduced in the Old Testament and the fulfilment of that promise in the New Testament. It traces Paul's exciting discovery that the New Covenant contained a 'secret' which opened God's kingdom to all races and conditions of humankind. It examines the implications of this better covenant for a true understanding and practise of daily living in the New Covenant.

In my opinion, the New Covenant is one of the most misunderstood subjects in the Church today. Many years ago, I wrote a blog about it and triggered reactions I never expected in my wildest dreams. Some of the reactions were very strong and aggressive and did not come from unbelievers but from well-meaning Christians, church leaders, and pastors. Generally speaking, there has been a mixture of the Old and New Covenants in the lives of Christians. Throughout most of church history, in belief and practice, the Church mixed these two Covenants, which greatly limited the expression of the life and power of Jesus Christ through her. Because the mixing of the two Covenants has been the norm rather than the exception, some of the teachings in this book might seem strange to you. If we have been accustomed to doing things in error for generations, then the right way will seem wrong to us. This book will transform your life forever

The New Covenant as a Paradigm for Optimal Relations regards the New Covenant primarily as a gracious and merciful redemptive deal, springing from God's unilateral, unconditional, and proactive initiative. The New Covenant is adopted as representing both a salvific and an exemplary paradigm that displays God's gracious and merciful ways toward his children. Ten discrete, yet interwoven principles are extracted from, interpreted, and abstracted from Scriptures pertaining to the promised New Covenant. These principles apply to those who, as dearly beloved children, are invited to imitate God's loving ways. God's manner of love defines the foundational basis from which the author derives and elaborates the propositions that guide the considerations pertaining to thoughts, feelings, motivations, and behaviors that enter into play in relational transactions. In terms of style, an architectural design permeates the content of this book, offering and encompassing a metacognitive view of God's covenantal ways: a top-down perspective that applies to bottom-up endeavors of relational nature. The challenges posed by our cultural, postmodern trends--devoid of absolute principles and lacking a moral compass--are countered and addressed by the author in insightful fashion, offering theologically-based guidelines integrated to sound psychological principles, applicable to psychotherapeutic and counseling endeavors as well as to pastoral care.

Covenant or contract is an important theme in the Bible. God made covenants with His people. He deals with them according to the covenants He made with them. Today we are under God’s New Covenant. For all God’s dealings with us in addition to our dealings with God will be governed by this New Covenant. We are therefore called to have New Covenant Living as well as New Covenant Ministry. It is hence extremely essential for us to be sure that our living and ministry are of the New Covenant way.
