In this sweeping work, Elliott Young traces the pivotal century of Chinese migration to the Americas, beginning with the 1840s at the start of the "coolie" trade and ending during World War II. The Chinese came as laborers, streaming across borders legally and illegally and working jobs few others wanted, from constructing railroads in California to harvesting sugar cane in Cuba. Though nations were built in part from their labor, Young argues that they were the first group of migrants to bear the stigma of being "alien." Being neither black nor white and existing outside of the nineteenth century Western norms of sexuality and gender, the Chinese were viewed as permanent outsiders, culturally and legally. It was their presence that hastened the creation of immigration bureaucracies charged with capture, imprisonment, and deportation. This book is the first transnational history of Chinese migration to the Americas. By focusing on the fluidity and complexity of border crossings throughout the Western Hemisphere, Young shows us how Chinese migrants constructed alternative communities and identities through these transnational pathways.

Esta es una crónica sobre la espeluznante violación de los derechos humanos que sufren los latinos ilegales dentro de una cárcel para extranjeros (denominados aliens) en los EE.UU. ¡Nada menos que en el país que exporta la defensa de los derechos humanos a todo el mundo! Buscando asilo, producto de una persecución política propiciada por el régimen socialista-indigenista de Evo Morales, Alien (el personaje principal del libro) acaba privado de su libertad por más de tres meses en Broward Transitional Center (BTC), muy cerca de Miami, en los EE.UU. Allí, el protagonista emprende un increíble viaje que le permite atestiguar —desde dentro— la realidad de los latinos ilegales encarcelados. En este periplo vive intensamente el abuso y la discriminación sin límites de los que son objeto los hispanos ilegales en unas cárceles (BTC es sólo una de las más de trescientas setenta y cuatro que existen a lo largo y ancho de EE.UU.) que están diseñadas para torturarlos y atormentarlos de manera sistemática. En estos reclusorios se hace todo lo posible para impedir el sueño de los presos (quienes sobreviven como zombis), así como para empantanar su comunicación con el mundo exterior. En ellos es muy fácil caer víctima de una paliza perpetrada por los agentes del ICE. Aparejado a estas historias, Alien cuenta la suya propia: las agonías de un solicitante de asilo que termina preso en las garras de un juez prejuicioso y racista —cuya trayectoria se destaca por rechazar miles de solicitudes de asilo—, protegiendo, supuestamente, a los EE.UU. de los aliens. EL AUTOR Ernesto Machicao Argiró ha transitado por diferentes caminos de la vida. Nació un 15 de enero de 1958 en la andina ciudad de La Paz, sede del gobierno de Bolivia. Allí se desenvolvió en la política como diputado nacional, ministro de Comunicación Social y embajador de Bolivia ante la República de Corea. Una vez que dejara el ejercicio pleno de la política, se desarrolló como abogado en la tropical Santa Cruz de la Sierra, donde actualmente reside. Se formó académicamente, primero, en los EE.UU., habiendo obtenido un B.A. en Ciencia Política y Economía de Westminster College (Missouri), y un M.A. en Ciencia Política de Drew University (New Jersey); y, posteriormente en Bolivia, habiéndose titulado en Derecho de la Universidad Católica Boliviana “San Pablo”. Desde muy joven fue amante de las letras y articulista en diversos periódicos de su país. Ha sido encarcelado producto de una solicitud de asilo en los EE.UU., hecho que motivó una irrefrenable necesidad de expresión literaria, cuyo resultado es Alien...: asilo y prisión en una cárcel de inmigrantes en EE.UU.
