With over 25 percent of its land set aside in national parks and other protected areas, Costa Rica is renowned worldwide as "the green republic." In this very readable history of conservation in Costa Rica, Sterling Evans explores the establishment of the country's national park system as a response to the rapid destruction of its tropical ecosystems due to the expansion of export-related agriculture. Drawing on interviews with key players in the conservation movement, as well as archival research, Evans traces the emergence of a conservation ethic among Costa Ricans and the tangible forms it has taken. In Part I, he describes the development of the national park system and "the grand contradiction" that conservation occurred simultaneously with massive deforestation in unprotected areas. In Part II, he examines other aspects of Costa Rica's conservation experience, including the important roles played by environmental education and nongovernmental organizations, campesino and indigenous movements, ecotourism, and the work of the National Biodiversity Institute.

Son estos los resultados de una investigación regional desarrollada en el occidente de Cuba que abarca desde la época precolombina hasta la etapa colonial y pone en práctica métodos de la Arqueología, la Etnografía y la Historia. Se concreta a partir de análisis físico-químicos del registro arqueológico que habían permitido constatar la ocurrencia de fenómenos climatológicos muy severos en el archipiélago, en un momento crucial del contacto entre aborígenes e hispanos; eventos estos que ha sido posible enmarcarlos, además, mediante el contraste de dos secuencias cronológicas diferentes: la primera, sobre la base de la cerámica aborigen, que abarca desde el poblamiento de la región por comunidades conocedoras de la agricultura y la alfarería hasta mediados el siglo XVI; y la segunda, en tanto a la cerámica de tradición aborigen en sitios coloniales, desde finales del siglo XVI hasta casi mediados del XVII, en la villa de San Cristóbal de La Habana.

Esta obra de los profesores del Grupo de Investigación en Derecho y Economía de la Universidad Externado de Colombia es el cuarto resultado de la Serie de Derecho Económico, y se edita a continuación de la Serie 1, sobre casos de estudio de aplicaciones del AED, en 2012; de la Serie 2, acerca de regulación económica, en 2013; y de la Serie 3, sobre nuevas vertientes y diferentes aplicaciones del análisis económico del Derecho, en 2014. Se continúa así con las publicaciones de la Serie de Derecho Económico, en las que el Departamento de Derecho Económico de la Universidad Externado de Colombia pone a disposición de la comunidad académica los resultados del trabajo colectivo de sus investigadores, contando en esta ocasión con un profesor invitado. Esta edición estuvo orientada a dar a conocer los resultados de investigaciones en diversas líneas, como son el behavioral, comportamentalismo o conductismo, mediante el cual se realiza el análisis de problemas de derecho económico con teorías que provienen de la psicología; temas de estudio del derecho de la competencia respecto de las ayudas públicas; asuntos del derecho del consumo, como es el caso de la contraposición entre la protección de los consumidores y la libertad de empresa; el seguimiento al marco institucional del mercado de valores en un aspecto específico como es la eficacia de las normas en lo que concierne a la titularización no hipotecaria; y la incursión en un nuevo campo de estudio, como el que corresponde al tratamiento algorítmico de la información, big data. como instrumento dinamizador de ciertas políticas públicas.
