"El término Criminología se emplea en diversos sentidos. En esta obra, designa aquella parte de la ciencia criminal que pone de relieve los factores de la criminalidad mediante la investigación empírica, es decir, los factores individuales y sociales que fundamentan la conducta criminal. Según esta definición, la Criminología se orienta, primariamente, hacia el análisis de la etiología del crimen, si bien no se pretende mantenerla estrictamente dentro de estos límites. El fondo de toda conducta criminal, como objeto de investigación, no puede ser separado incondicionalmente de la forma y extensión de esta misma conducta; de aquí que la Criminología deba también incluir, en cierto grado, la fenomenología. El objeto esencial de esta obra es informar acerca de la investigación destinada a revelar los factores básicos de la criminalidad; sin embargo, en este aspecto, también versará sobre determinados problemas concernientes a la fenomenología de la conducta criminal, así como a la clasificación, tratamiento y pronóstico de los delincuentes, aun cuando no entre dentro de sus límites el análisis sistemático de un programa de Política penal. La obra trata únicamente de la Criminología general, a la que acompaña la Criminología especial de unas cuantas formas típicas de conducta criminal, tales como la criminalidad homicida, sexual, etc. Algunas de las más importantes y recientes investigaciones hacen referencia a tales tipos específicos de criminalidad, a veces definidos según criterios sociológicos que, en cierto modo, son independientes de la definición legal de tales delitos.
