L’estudi del lèxic es pot enfocar des de diferents perspectives: lexicografia, estudi dels mots, crítica textual i anàlisi de les obres que s’hi relacionen. Aquest llibre pren en consideració precisament aquests aspectes, que encara presen¬ten buits i que cal anar reblint a poc a poc. La primera part de l’obra se centra en l’àmbit dels diccionaris i s’estudien els dos grans pilars de la lexicografia catalana, que són, d’una banda, el Diccionari General de la Llengua catalana de Pompeu Fabra (1932) i, d’una altra, el Diccionari català-valencià-balear d’Antoni M. Alcover i de Francesc de B. Moll (1932-1962). A partir de 1932 l’activitat lexicogràfica ha estat incessant i ací s’estudia monogràficament, especialment els diccionaris de Coromines, i el francès de von Wartburg, com a contrast. La segona part es dedica als aspectes lexicals, i, des d’aquesta perspectiva, s’estudien les circumstàncies en què ha evolucionat el nostre lèxic. A la crítica textual, que conforma la tercera part d’aquest volum, es reserva un espai considerable, puix que és una branca de la filologia del major interès, no gaire conreada a casa nostra. En l’apartat d’obres cabdals, que en forma el darrer apartat, s’analitza sobretot l’aparició dels nous atles lingüístics, com a recipiendaris de lèxic, i algunes altres aportacions destacades de la nostra filologia.
