Las cruzadas han tenido una larga y contradictoria memoria en nuestra cultura política. Vilipendiadas como reflejo del fanatismo religioso de la Edad Media o enaltecidas como símbolo de una época de ideales puros, estas campañas han servido para justificar acciones tan dispares como la invasión norteamericana de Afganistán en 2001 o la sublevación ilegal de Franco contra el Gobierno de la República al que había jurado lealtad. Incluso la creación del Estado de Israel ha sido comparada con la del Reino de Jerusalén tras la Primera Cruzada (1095-1099). Desde su nacimiento, estas expediciones han reflejado, al mismo tiempo, el expansionismo de la cristiandad latina, las ambiciones papales, un deseo de reforma religiosa, el ideal caballeresco de los nobles y prácticas devocionales que resultaban enormemente familiares a todos los sectores de la sociedad de la época. La idea de la guerra santa cristiana surgió en el contexto social y cultural de la cristiandad latina de finales del siglo XI, motivada por la situación política del Mediterráneo oriental. Sin embargo, las cruzadas trascendieron el deseo originario de recuperar Jerusalén, por lo que, aunque este libro se centrará en las campañas tradicionales, no se olvidarán otros escenarios bélicos, como el Báltico o la península ibérica, ni se terminará la narración en 1291, con la caída de Acre y la desaparición de los Estados latinos de Ultramar.

The Sacrament of Penance and Religious Life in Golden Age Spain explores the practice of sacramental confession in Spain between roughly 1500 and 1700. One of the most significant points of contact between the laity and ecclesiastical hierarchy, confession lay at the heart of attempts to bring religious reformation to bear upon the lives of early modern Spaniards. Rigid episcopal legislation, royal decrees, and a barrage of prescriptive literature lead many scholars to construct the sacrament fundamentally as an instrument of social control foisted upon powerless laypeople. Drawing upon a wide range of early printed and archival materials, this book considers confession as both a top-down and a bottom-up phenomenon. Rather than relying solely upon prescriptive and didactic literature, it considers evidence that describes how the people of early modern Spain experienced confession, offering a rich portrayal of a critical and remarkably popular component of early modern religiosity.
