Emilia Pardo Bazán nació en La Coruña el 16 de septiembre de 1851. Heredó el liberalismo de su padre Don José y el carácter abierto, emprendedor e independiente de su madre. Su infancia fue un paseo entre bibliotecas. Leyó siempre con prisa y con ferocidad. Murió el 12 de mayo de 1921, cuando había conseguido el título de Catedrática de Literaturas Neolatinas. Pudo ser la primera presidenta del Ateneo y debió ser la primera Académica de la Lengua, pero lo impidieron las resistencias machistas.Fragmento de la maravillosa obra Cuentos Nuevos: Su primer pensamiento, al recordar, no fue para Rosario ni para las esperadas venturas, sino para el Cinco de Copas.¡Cuánto tiempo hace que no veo aquel mamarracho!, dijo entre sí el mozo, riendo en alto y registrando con la vista, allá en el fondo de Valceleste, el convento, el claustro, la huerta, las torres de la iglesia, que ya empezaban a anegarse en las sombras del crepúsculo. Casi al mismo tiempo que se acordaba de los rojos brochazos, sintió levísimo roce de pisadas, y un fraile, calada la capucha, sepultadas en las mangas ambas manos, cruzó por delante de él. Nada tenía de extraño que pasase un fraile a tales horas; sin duda, por ser la de la queda, regresaba a Valceleste; y, con todo, el estudiante percibió esa sensación súbita que no puede definirse y que es preludio del miedo. Antes de salvar el recodo de la senda, volvióse el fraile, y su cara puntiaguda, exangüe, sumida, chupada, momia, surgió de la capilla; sus pupilas cóncavas y ardientes se clavaron en Agustín y, sacando de la manga una pálida mano, hízole una seña... El estudiante se estremeció, pero al punto saltó del asiento de piedra.La obra cuentística de Pardo Bazán podría ilustrar mejor que ninguna otra cuanto sobre el cuento pudiera decirse.Dada la forma de publicación de los cuentos y su consiguiente diserción, resulta realmente difícil recopilar toda la producción de la autora. La inmensa mayoría de sus cuentos aparecen en la prensa periódica de la época. Después, la propia autora recoge buena parte de estos relatos, sobre todo con la intención de rescatarlos del olvido, en colecciones. Buena prueba de ello son series como La dama joven o Sud-exprés que toman su título del relato que encabeza el volumen. En otros casos, como Cuentos escogidos, Cuentos nuevos, Lecciones de Literatura y Arco Iris los títulos indican claramente el carácter estrictamente recopilatorio de la serie. El resto de las colecciones -Cuentos de Marineda, Cuentos de amor, Cuentos sacro-profanos, Un destripador deantaño, En tranvía, Cuentos de Navidad y Reyes. Cuentos de la patria. Cuentos antiguos, El fondo del alma, Cuentos de la tierra, Cuentos de Navidad y Año Nuevo - aparecen agrupados temáticarnente. Pero con todo, quedaban muchísimos cuentos perdidosen las páginas de los periódicos y revistas en que vieron la luz.
