Class, Self, Culture puts class back on the map in a novel way by taking a new look at how class is made and given value through culture. It shows how different classes become attributed with value, enabling culture to be deployed as a resource and as a form of property, which has both use-value to the person and exchange-value in systems of symbolic and economic exchange. The book shows how class has not disappeared, but is known and spoken in a myriad of different ways, always working through other categorisations of nation, race, gender and sexuality and across different sites: through popular culture, political rhetoric and academic theory. In particular attention is given to how new forms of personhood are being generated through mechanisms of giving value to culture, and how what we come to know and assume to be a 'self' is always a classed formation. Analysing four processes: of inscription, institutionalisation, perspective-taking and exchange relationships, it challenges recent debates on reflexivity, risk, rational-action theory, individualisation and mobility, by showing how these are all reliant on fixing some people in place so that others can move.

Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled Culture and self-enhancement: Above-average effect as a function of personal trait importance and cultural trait importance submitted by TAM Kim Pong for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in July 2006 That human possesses a basic need for self-esteem and a motivation to maintain a positive view of the self (i.e., self-enhancement motive) is suggested in many psychological theories. Based on previous research, the present research presents an integrated view of culture and self-enhancement, which entails two basic premises: (i) self-enhancement motive is universal, and (ii) self-enhancement behavior is subject to self-motivations and social and cultural constraints. In three studies, two conducted in Hong Kong and one in US, self-enhancement was operationalized as above-average effect. On a number of traits, participants were asked to compare themselves with other people of the same gender, age and background. Also, participants were asked to report the personal importance, as well as the perceived importance to most fellow cultural members, of these traits. Self-enhancement was found in both cultural samples. Also, across the two cultures, self-enhancement was positively associated with personal trait importance: participants self-enhanced more on self-evaluation dimensions which were personally important. In addition, found in Hong Kong participants only but not in American participants, self-enhancement was negatively associated with perceived cultural trait importance: self-enhancement was weaker on dimensions perceived to be important to most fellow cultural members. This culturally variant tendency to consider cultural trait importance in self-enhancement is attributed to the prevalence of modesty norm in Hong Kong culture. In all, the present research demonstrates that self-enhancement is a function of personal importance and cultural importance of the self-evaluation dimensions, and the weights of these two factors are culturally variant.
