In Europe the analogy between a silent film accompanied by music and an opera comes primarily from a German perspective. It would be unthinkable without Richard Wagner's conception of musical drama as a total work of art. If opera was often used as a comparison, although the use of singing to accompany films (as for example in sound-on-disc films or opera films) was an exception, it was because a number of early films make use of subjects known from the operatic stage. Those films which draw directly on operas develop a mode for the reception of musical compilation as a nexus of intercultural references. Together with the art films which, using the model of opera, were marketed using a media combination of piano scores of original music, libretti, and lists of leitmotifs, these helped contribute to the development of artistic films as "total works of art".

Music and Levels of Narration in Film is the first book-length study to synthesize scholarly contributions toward a narrative theory of film music. Moving beyond the distinction between diegetic and nondiegetic music--or music that is not understood as part of a film's "story world"--Guido Heldt systematically discusses music at different levels of narration, from the extrafictional to "focalizations" of subjectivity. Heldt then applies this conceptual toolkit to study the narrative strategies of music in individual films, as well as genres, including musicals and horror films. The resulting volume will be an indispensable resource for anyone researching or studying film music or film narratology. Music in Film: Soundtracks and Synergy discusses a broad range of films - from classical Hollywood through to American independents and European art films - and offers a brief history of the development of music in film from the silent era to the present day. In particular, this book explores how music operates as a narrative device, and also emotionally and culturally. By focusing on the increasing synergy between film and music texts, it includes an extended case study of Magnolia as a film script which developed from a pop song. Emphasis is also placed on the divide between the `high culture' of the orchestral score and the `low culture' of the pop song.

Composing For The Cinema written by Ennio Morricone and has been published by Scarecrow Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-10-10 with Performing Arts categories.

With nearly 400 scores to his credit, Ennio Morricone is one of the most prolific and influential film composers working today. He has collaborated with many significant directors, and his scores for such films as The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly; Once Upon a Time in America; Days of Heaven; The Mission; The Untouchables; Malèna; and Cinema Paradiso leave moviegoers with the conviction that something special was achieved—a conviction shared by composers, scholars, and fans alike. In Composing for the Cinema: The Theory and Praxis of Music in Film, Morricone and musicologist Sergio Miceli present a series of lectures on the composition and analysis of film music. Adapted from several lectures and seminars, these lessons show how sound design can be analyzed and offer a variety of musical solutions to many different kinds of film. Though aimed at composers, Morricone’s expositions are easy to understand and fascinating even to those without any musical training. Drawing upon scores by himself and others, the composer also provides insight into his relationships with many of the directors with whom he has collaborated, including Sergio Leone, Giuseppe Tornatore, Franco Zeffirelli, Warren Beatty, Ridley Scott, Roland Joffé, the Taviani Brothers, and others. Translated and edited by Gillian B. Anderson, an orchestral conductor and musicologist, these lessons reveal Morricone’s passion about musical expression. Delivered in a conversational mode that is both comprehensible and interesting, this groundbreaking work intertwines analysis with practical details of film music composition. Aimed at a wide audience of composers, musicians, film historians, and fans, Composing for the Cinema contains a treasure trove of practical information and observations from a distinguished musicologist and one of the most accomplished composers on the international film scene.

Theory of Film Music strives to explain how music functions in film, how it is perceived by viewers, and which meanings and values it represents in the dramaturgy of a film work. The book points out the scope of expressive potentials of music in film and arranges them in systems. It draws upon the knowledge of psychology of perception, acoustics, aesthetics of music and film, and it explains film music through concepts, and terms of semiotics. It is concerned with music in relation to film space and time, music's incorporation in film montage, and music's impressiveness in relation to the graphic nature of film pictures. It points out the expression and symbolism of individual historical and genre types of music. Trying to provide a more vivid account of the extent of theoretically outlined propositions, the book offers more than 200 examples of verbal description of certain moments in films ranging from the beginnings of the sound film up to the present. They also manifest typical creative tendencies in the history of film music. The book is supplemented with score excerpts, analyses, photographs, and registers.

The golden age of Malay film in the 1950s and 1960s was the product of a musical and cultural cosmopolitanism in the service of a nation-making process based on ideas of Malay ethnonationalism, initially fluid, increasingly homogenised over time. The commercial films of the period, and in particular their film music, from national cultural icons P. Ramlee and Zubir Said, remain important reference points for Malaysia and Singapore to this day. This is the first in-depth study of the film music of the period. It brings together ethnomusicological and cultural studies perspectives. Written in an engaging manner, thoroughly illustrated and incorporating musical scores, the book will appeal to dedicated film fans, musicians, composers and film-makers interested in Southeast Asia and the Malay world. But equally, the conceptual framework will be of interest to a broad range of scholars of Southeast Asia, as it brings together ideas of cosmopolitanism and cultural intimacy to narrate a history of nation-making in the region.

The analysis of film music is emerging as one of the fastest-growing areas of interest in film studies. Yet scholarship in this up-and-coming field has been beset by the lack of a common language and methodology between film and music theory. Drawing on the philosophy of Gilles Deleuze, film studies scholar Gregg Redner provides a much-needed analysis of the problem which then forms the basis of his exploration of the function of the film score and its relation to film's other elements. Not just a groundbreaking examination of persistent difficulties in this new area of study, Deleuze and Film Music also offers a solution—a methodological bridge—that will take film music analysis to a new level.
