O livro Guerra e Vida Errada: representações sociais da violência no Recife lança um novo olhar para a vida cotidiana de jovens na capital pernambucana. A obra propõe-se a reler os medos, as inquietações, as inseguranças, as alegrias, as relações de amizades, as relações de sociabilidade que moradores dos territórios do bairro de Santo Amaro, situado na zona central da cidade do Recife, possuem. Por seu conteúdo marcante e dinâmico, essa etnografia torna-se um caminho possível para acessar as percepções de homens jovens sobre violência urbana. O material etnográfico se refere aos diários de campo produzidos a partir da observação direta e da realização de entrevistas semiestruturadas com sujeitos na faixa etária dos 17 aos 33 anos à época da pesquisa. Com a intenção de acessar as percepções de jovens sobre violência urbana, o livro traz a noção de representações (sociais) para compreender esse fenômeno em seu aspecto subjetivo, sobretudo quando a alteridade desses atores sociais é desconsiderada, esquecida e negada. Esta obra utiliza as representações (sociais) voltadas aos estudos da violência urbana ao relevar as atribuições de significados que os atores sociais imprimiram às categorias nativas guerra e vida errada, subjacentes à construção de suas identidades.

This book examines how and why Portugal and Spain increasingly engaged with women in their African colonies in the crucial period from the 1950s to the 1970s. It explores the rhetoric of benevolent Iberian colonialism, gendered Westernization, and development for African women as well as actual imperial practices – from forced resettlement to sexual exploitation to promoting domestic skills. Focusing on Angola, Mozambique, Western Sahara, and Equatorial Guinea, the author mines newly available and neglected documents, including sources from Portuguese and Spanish women’s organizations overseas. They offer insights into how African women perceived and responded to their assigned roles within an elite that was meant to preserve the empires and stabilize Afro-Iberian ties. The book also retraces parallels and differences between imperial strategies regarding women and the notions of African anticolonial movements about what women should contribute to the struggle for independence and the creation of new nation-states.

The Portuguese Colonial War and the African Liberation Struggles: Memory, Politics and Uses of the Past presents a critical and comparative analysis on the memory of the colonial and liberation wars that led to a regime change in Portugal and to the independence of five new African countries: Angola, Mozambique, Guinea-Bissau, Cape Verde, and São Tomé and Príncipe. Covering more than six decades and based on original archival research and critical analysis of sources and interviews, the book offers the first plural account of the public memorialisation of this contested past in Portugal and in former colonised territories in Africa, focussing on diachronic and synchronic processes of mnemonic production. This innovative exercise highlights the changing and crossed nature of political memories and social representations through time, emphasizing three modes of mnemonic intersections: the intersection of distinct historical times, the intersection between multiple products and practices of memory and the intersection connecting the different countries and national histories. Ontologia da violência: o enigma da crueldade propõe-se a pensar o ser da violência desconstruindo as bases tradicionais antropológicas da compreensão deste problema. Por muito tempo, o Ocidente disse ser o homem um animal racional. Controlando a animalidade do homem, a violência seria superada. No entanto, não existe nenhum animal genocida. Entre cães, gatos e cavalos não surgiu sequer uma chacina ou campo de extermínio. Ao mesmo tempo, a razão tecnocrática, com seu ímpeto dominador e controlador da realidade, elevou aos estertores o poder de destruição humana. Por isso, o livro afirma que a violência é uma possibilidade sempre presente da totalidade da existência humana. Ela nasce de um tipo específico de existência: aquela que não suporta a presença da alteridade, além de não tolerar o caráter temporal e transitório da realidade. Somente uma vida degenerada, que não suporta os “riscos” impostos pela alteridade e pelo devir, procura negar o outro como meio para sua autoafirmação. Episódios como a homofobia, a sexofobia, a perseguição dos negros, as guerras mundiais, são meios de disseminação de uma vida (cultural) degenerada. Neste sentido, ao inquirir o ser da violência, Ontologia da violência abre portas para um enfrentamento radical desse problema, sem sugerir fórmulas mágicas, soluções românticas ou esperanças racionalistas.
