Debit and Credit by Gustav Freytag is a six-part political fiction tale emphasizing the importance of economic stability and criticizing Jewish and Polish citizens in Germany. Excerpt: "Ostrau is a small town near the Oder, celebrated even as far as Poland for its gymnasium and its gingerbread. In this patriarchal spot had dwelt for many years the accountant-royal, Wohlfart, an enthusiastically loyal subject, and a hearty lover of his fellow men—with one or two exceptions. He married late in life, and his wife and he lived in a small house, the garden of which he kept in order. For a long time, the happy pair were childless..."

After the death of his father, young Anton Wohlfart begins an apprenticeship in the office of the merchant T. O. Schröter in Breslau. Anton quickly succeeds through honest and diligent work, achieving a proper bourgeois existence. He has a variety of experiences with the Schröter family and also with the noble family of the Rothsattels. He later becomes involved with the liquidation of the estate of the Rothsattel family, an obvious symbol of the decline of the nobility and of its clash with emergent capitalist forces. Anton has repeated interactions with two other young men, the Jew Veitel Itzig, whom he had known already in his home town, Ostrau[disambiguation needed], and a young nobleman, Herr von Fink, who is a co-worker in the Schröter firm.

Excerpt from Debit and Credit: Translated From the German Sir, replied the man, I have made it exactly accord ing to your directions. You have, have you continued Fink Well, then, as a punishment, you shall go with us; you must see that it is but fair that we should be drowned together. No, sir, that I will not do, with so much wind as this, returned the man, decidedly. Then stay ashore and make sawdust pap for your chil dren. Give me the mast and sails. He fitted in the little mast, hoisted and examined the sails, then took them down again, and laid them at the bottom of the boat, threw in a few iron bars as ballast, told Anton where to sit, and, seizing the two oars, struck out from shore. The pumpkin danced gayly on the water, to the great delight of the builder and his friends, who stood watching it. Excerpt from The Theory of Debit and Credit in Accounting A. Deposits one thousand dollars with me. He is a creditor; I am a debtor. I open an account in his name and credit him one thousand dollars. To complete the record, I might open an account in my name and debit this account one thousand dollars. On my books, however, there is no object in opening the second account.* If A. Is cred ited on my books, the implication is that I am the debtor. The second account would give me no additional information. If money were the only thing by reason of which A. Could be credited, and with which I could be charged, there would never be any object in opening the second account.
