What I've seen again and again in my thirty-plus years as a psychotherapist, and seminar leader, is that being too externally focused often lies at the heart of our stress and emotional struggles. Many of us have achieved the things that society deems successful, yet feel unfulfilled and anxious because we define ourselves, and our worth, according to what we do, rather than who we are. We equate our self-worth with accomplishments, conforming to societal norms, peer acceptance and family expectations. When we are estranged from our Intrinsic Self, we overlook our own needs, and instead attend to the needs of others, often accommodating them to "fit in" and maintain harmony. Our need for external validation and the feeling that we are never "enough" creates stress and keeps us stuck in repeated self-destructive patterns. The Intrinsic Self can help you break free from the external trap by teaching you to challenge outdated survival strategies that create a need to see yourself, and be seen by others, as competent or helpful in order to feel adequate and emotionally secure. Much more than simply increasing self-esteem, you will learn how addressing the specific ways you define your value and identity is key to creating a richer, more fulfilling life.

Self Definition written by Teodros Kiros and has been published by Rowman & Littlefield this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-10-10 with Philosophy categories.

Self Definition argues that sex, gender, and race are constructions by the ineffable self as it seeks to define its possibilities free of domination. The self’s embodiments are themselves performances of self definition. Teodros Kiros supports his argument by a careful reading of the literature from both the Global South and Global North that spans figures, works, and eras from antiquity to our late modern present. These readings demonstrate that race, gender, and sex are performed in the Global South radically differently from in the Global North. These three notions as markers of identity are fluid, open, and expansive, and Kiros brilliantly shows this through inquiry into thought rooted in Egypt, Ethiopia, India, and China. By the time that the Global North forges possibilities of the self in the modern period, race, gender, and sex become fixed. Biology and anatomy become understood as destinies, and the possibilities of the self are deeply constrained. This book approaches case studies of key figures and movements chronologically and thematically, and in doing so Kiros highlights the tensions between the openness of the Global South and the rigidity of the Global North through which human possibilities as exercises of self-definition become clear under conditions of freedom. Our views of self definition will forever be transformed after reading this important text.

What are the characteristics and dimensions of the self? Is there a “best” way to measure the self? How does the researcher’s definition of the self affect the choice of research measure and methods? These are the questions addressed by this book. Unlike previous books on the self, this one provides a systematic analysis of the theoretical and methodological issues involved. It offers a description of several alternative methods for studying the self, and discussions of the advantages and disadvantages of these different approaches. Emphasized here are the phenomenological and experiential nature of the self, its multidimensionality and hierarchical structure, and the relationship between defining and measuring the self. Among the methodological issues addressed are the impact of significant others on the self, the factors that affect the process of reporting about the self, between-group comparison of self-structure, the structure of the self in relationship to others, and the effects of differing cultural contexts.

Early 20th-century literary critics Joseph Collins, Hermann Hesse, and Percy Lubbock concluded that the pages of a book present a succession of moments that the reader visualizes and reinterprets. They feared that few would actually commit themselves to memory, and that most were likely to soon disappear. As you turn these pages, you will (re)discover the value of the literary canon through the Self. My objective is to examine how the Self is formed, lost, and regained through creative strategies that confront and define its shapes and distortions on nearly every page of a canonical work. You can consider Confronting / Defining the Self: Formation and Dissolution of the ‘I’ from La Fayette to Grass as offering an apology for the study of literature and the humanities in an era when technology and commerce dominate our consciousness, drive our daily expectations, and shape our career goals.
