Dental Caries is a major new work on a subject of vital concern to all dentists. It builds on the work of two former books, Textbook of Clinical Cariology and Fluoride in Dentistry, to present a definitive resource on caries prevention and treatment. The management of dental caries is central to daily work in dental offices because caries is ubiquitous in all populations, lesion development continues lifelong and caries is the most common cause of tooth loss around the world. The book's logical structure consists of four parts, covering: The Disease; Diagnosis; Prevention, Non-Operative and Operative Treatment and Prognosis. It provides a clear understanding of the disease process, be it at an individual or population level. The Editors are joined by 28 expert authors who have contributed a wealth of chapters, ranging from the role of fluorides to restoring the tooth. Careful balance between prophylaxis and surgical intervention guides the reader through the maze of treatment decisions, while the breadth of the book reflects diverse, and sometimes controversial, opinion on dental caries.

Prevention is better than healing ... or treatment. Thus, preventive dentistry is a cross-sectional challenge for all fields in dentistry, and one that has already achieved great success, as shown by the caries decline in many countries. The walls between prevention and treatment have recently fallen in caries and periodontal disease, as well as in orthodontics, where guidance of function and space maintenance are a combination of prevention and treatment. This book discusses new developments and innovations in preventive dentistry, from primary "real" prevention to secondary prevention by inactivating initial lesions, and on to tertiary prevention to avoid subsequent progression and complications of manifest oral disease. This evidence base is then translated into clinical dental practice. The book addresses everyone interested or involved in dentistry, including students, the whole dental practice team, educators, health scientists, and policy makers, who want to gain insight into these up-to-date clinical practices and future developments. It intends to make an impact on teaching and all fields of clinical dentistry – not by giving cookbook recipes, but by pointing out the rationale behind the changes in our routines. Presented by an international group of recognized specialists in their fields, the topics include the new understanding and management of caries and periodontal disease, prevention of orthodontic problems, diagnostic approaches, the role of diet and according recommendations for oral health, routes to better oral hygiene, changes in oral disease patterns and their consequences, non- and minimally invasive caries treatment, current fluoride guidelines including the use of silver fluorides, risk management, a common risk-factor approach, facilitating behavior changes, sealants, and probiotics. This broad spectrum is elucidated for the most relevant dental problems from early childhood to seniors to implement preventively oriented dental practice.

Excerpt from The Prevention of Dental Caries and Oral Sepsis The fact of the first edition being exhausted in the year following its publication has allowed but small opportunity for the insertion in the present edition of much that I had hoped to include, more especially in relation to work being done by others along similar lines in America, particularly by Drs. Gies, Lothrop, and Howe, and my own investigation into the cause of immunity in less civilized Maori children. Nevertheless, some fresh subjects have been broached in the present edition. These include accounts of our investigations into the bacteriology of the mouths of immune Maori children, the anatomy and physiology of mastication, thyroid insufficiency and dental caries, and the relationship between oral and other alimentary secretions. These subjects are dealt with in Chapters III., IV., XIII., and XVII. respectively. Also, additional experiments are described bearing on the solubility of the enamel surface in carbon dioxide, the neutralizing powers of tooth substance and saliva, the viscosity of saliva, the action of sulphocyanates in saliva, the digestion of starch, the effects of sugar-cane, white bread, and whole-meal bread on the teeth. Considerable additional evidence has been collected showing the lack of toughness or of fibrous elements in the food of races immune to caries. A number of fresh illustrations are also included. This work has grown so largely since its inception that its original claim to be the R.C.S.E. Cartwright Prize Essay for 1910 can no longer be sustained. My sincere thanks are due to my friend Mr. R. H. Pardoe for his invaluable assistance in seeing both editions through the press, and to the publishers for the courtesy and thoroughness with which the wishes of the author have been carried out under the somewhat difficult circumstance of his being fourteen thousand miles away. This book focuses on oral health promotion and the impact of systemic disease in the development of oral disease, as well as how to introduce, apply, and communicate prevention to a patient with a defined risk profile. Prevention in Clinical Oral Health Care integrates preventive approaches into clinical practice, and is a valuable tool for all health care professionals to integrate oral health prevention as a component of their overall preventive message to the patient. Discusses risk-based approaches to prevent problems such as caries, periodontal disease, and oral cancer. Topics are written at a level that can be understood by both practicing dental health team members and by dental hygiene and dental students so strategies can be applied to better understand the patient's risk for oral disease and how to prevent future disease. Identifies the barriers, oral health care needs, and preventive strategies for special populations such as children, the elderly, and the physically or mentally disabled. Explores the development of a culturally sensitive dental practice and strategies to make the dental environment more welcoming to individuals with different cultural backgrounds. Discusses how to gather patient information, the synthesis of the patient's data, and the application of the information collected in order to evaluate the patient's risk for disease.
