Frank Herbert's »Dune« (1965) is considered to be one of the most successful Science Fiction novels of the 20th century. It introduces its readers to a future universe, in which the production of the most valuable resource of the universe – ›spice‹ – is only possible on one vast desert planet called Arrakis. »Dune« offers many different motifs, including a hero that eventually turns into a superhuman being. However, the novel is also rich of orientalist semiotics and relates to a sign system existent when Herbert wrote his book. Frank Jacob discusses these semiotics in detail and shows how much of »Lawrence of Arabia« is present in the story's plot.

This textbook provides the basic theoretical and practical knowledge of astronomy and astrophysics. It provides an overview from classical astronomy and observational methods to solar physics and astrophysics of stars and galaxies. It concludes with chapters on cosmology, astrobiology, and mathematical and numerical methods. Numerous color illustrations, examples of calculations, and exercises with solutions make this work a useful companion to undergraduate astronomy lectures. The book is suitable for students of physics and astronomy at teacher training level or in the Bachelor's degree - but also people interested in natural sciences with appropriate basic knowledge of mathematics and physics will find here an appealing introduction to the subject. This fourth edition has been updated and revised with respect to the latest developments in astronomy. The chapter on mathematical methods has been redesigned and the software used is now exclusively Python. From the contents: Spherical astronomy - History of astronomy - Celestial mechanics - Astronomical instruments - Physics of the bodies of the solar system - The Sun - State variables of the stars - Stellar atmospheres - Stellar structure - Stellar evolution - Interstellar matter - The Galaxy - Extragalactic systems - Cosmology - Astrobiology - Mathematical methods. This book is a translation of the original German 4th edition Einführung in Astronomie und Astrophysik by Arnold Hanslmeier, published by Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature in 2020. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content, so that the book will read stylistically differently from a conventional translation. Springer Nature works continuously to further the development of tools for the production of books and on the related technologies to support the authors.

Numerology is the belief that numbers have power over events. It is a descendent of number mysticism, the belief the contemplation of numbers can give mystical and non-rational insights into life, the universe, and everything. Twenty-five hundred years ago, Pythagoras originated number mysticism, crediting certain numbers with characteristics, though numerology is a more recent invention that allots numbers, hence, characteristics to individuals. Underwood Dudley outlines here the history of number mysticism and numerology and gives many examples, including biorhythyms, Bible-numberists, pyram.

Divine Decadence written by Linda Mizejewski and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-07-14 with Performing Arts categories.

As femme fatale, cabaret siren, and icon of Camp, the Christopher Isherwood character Sally Bowles has become this century's darling of "divine decadence"--a measure of how much we are attracted by the fiction of the "shocking" British/American vamp in Weimar Berlin. Originally a character in a short story by Isherwood, published in 1939, "Sally" has appeared over the years in John Van Druten's stage play I Am a Camera, Henry Cornelius's film of the same name, and Joe Masteroff's stage musical and Bob Fosse's Academy Award-winning musical film, both entitled Cabaret. Linda Mizejewski shows how each successive repetition of the tale of the showgirl and the male writer/scholar has linked the young man's fascination with Sally more closely to the fascination of fascism. In every version, political difference is read as sexual difference, fascism is disavowed as secretly female or homosexual, and the hero eventually renounces both Sally and the corruption of the coming regime. Mizejewski argues, however, that the historical and political aspects of this story are too specific--and too frightening--to explain in purely psychoanalytic terms. Instead, Divine Decadence examines how each text engages particular cultural issues and anxieties of its era, from postwar "Momism" to the Vietnam War. Sally Bowles as the symbol of "wild Weimar" or Nazi eroticism represents "history" from within the grid of many other controversial discourses, including changing theories of fascism, the story of Camp, vicissitudes of male homosexual representations and discourses, and the relationships of these issues to images of female sexuality. To Mizejewski, the Sally Bowles adaptations end up duplicating the fascist politics they strain to condemn, reproducing the homophobia, misogyny, fascination for spectacle, and emphasis of sexual difference that characterized German fascism. Originally published in 1992. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Recombinant Antibodies written by Frank Breitling and has been published by Wiley-Spektrum this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999-09-30 with Medical categories.

As new recombinant DNA technology continues to join with cellular and molecular immunology, the field of antibody engineering has become a flourishing discipline. Antibody genes are now being cloned, genetically manipulated, and expressed to produce antigen binding proteins. Recombinant Antibodies addresses this burgeoning field with its comprehensive survey of the developing possibilities for producing specific antibodies by combinatorial methods. Following a comprehensive introduction to the field, the book is divided into four parts: a detailed introduction to the underlying concepts of recombinant antibodies, a description of the various methods for the generation of recombinant antibodies, their production and purification, and various designs and applications of genetically engineered proteins. The combination of these techniques substantially extends the functionality of natural antibodies. In addition, the book will focus on: Hybridoma immortalization. Generation and functional screening of highly complex antibody gene libraries. Human monoclonal antibodies to highly toxic and pathogenic antigens. Improving specificity or affinity of antibodies. New agents for cancer diagnosis and therapy. Genetic fusions for the production of bi- and multifunctional molecules. Production of large quantities of recombinant antibodies. New methods of purification. Emerging technologies. Recombinant Antibodies is the first general overview of the emerging field of antibody engineering and will serve as the definitive source for researchers and engineers in biology and medicine, biochemistry, immunology, and molecular biology, as well as anyone who is interested in biotechnology and antibody engineering.

The Russian Soul And The Jew written by F. Dreizin and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1990 with Literary Criticism categories.

Analyzes Russian popular images of the Jew and the negative stereotype of a mythical Jew, and their impact on Gogol, Dostoyevsky, Pasternak, and Solzhenitsyn. Discusses the Jewish characters and the negative image of the Ukrainian Jewish community in Gogol's novel "Taras Bulba", pointing out Gogol's attachment to anti-Jewish prejudices prevalent in Russian and Ukrainian culture. Examines the obsessive hatred of the Jew as the embodiment of evil expressed in Dostoyevsky's private letters and in his ideological writings, attributed to his paranoid tendencies. Remarks, however, on the almost total absence of antisemitism in Dostoyevsky's literary works. Surveys the history of the "Protocols of the Elders of Zion", focusing on its role in reinforcing the myth of a Jewish and Masonic world conspiracy. Points to Solzhenitsyn's ambivalent attitude toward the Jewish characters in his works, contending that he made no effort to prevent an antisemitic ideological interpretation of the negative Jewish characters in "Lenin in Zurich" and "August 1914".
