This study looks at the life and work of the eminent German-American author, poet, and historian, Heinrich A. Rattermann (1832-1923) and provides an historical legacy essential to an understanding of German-American history. He was well-known as editor of the historical journal Der Deutsche Pionier which was published by the German Pioneer Society of Cincinnati, Ohio, and is considered to be the leading German-American historical journal of the 19th century. In addition he edited Deutsch-Amerikanisches Magazin which was also important as a German-American historical journal. Born in Ankum, Germany, Rattermann emigrated with his family to Cincinnati, Ohio, and thereafter played an important role in German-American cultural affairs both regionally and nationally. This book is a re-edition of Sister Mary Edmund Spanheimer's biography of Heinrich Rattermann, which has long been out-of-print. Mary Spanheimer was a professor of German at the University of Saint Francis, Joliet, Illinois. Her biography on Rattermann is considered to be the definitive work on the topic.

As the sectional conflict escalated, discontented Europeans came in record numbers, further dividing the young republic over issues of race, nationality, and citizenship. The arrival of German-speaking “Forty-Eighters,” refugees of the failed European revolutions of 1848–49, fueled apprehensions about the nation’s future. Reaching America did not end the foreign revolutionaries’ pursuit of freedom; it merely transplanted it. In We Are the Revolutionists, Mischa Honeck offers a fresh appraisal of these exiled democrats by probing their relationship to another group of beleaguered agitators: America’s abolitionists. Honeck details how individuals from both camps joined forces in the long, dangerous battle to overthrow slavery. In Texas and in cities like Milwaukee, Cincinnati, and Boston this cooperation helped them find new sources of belonging in an Atlantic world unsettled by massive migration and revolutionary unrest. Employing previously untapped sources to write the experience of radical German émigrés into the abolitionist struggle, Honeck elucidates how these interethnic encounters affected conversations over slavery and emancipation in the United States and abroad. Forty-Eighters and abolitionists, Honeck argues, made creative use not only of their partnerships but also of their disagreements to redefine notions of freedom, equality, and humanity in a transatlantic age of racial construction and nation making.

Aufgrund offensichtlicher Pionier-Nachteile stellt sich die Frage, ob vorsichtiges Abwarten und Lernen aus den Fehlern des Pioniers die aussichtsreichere Markteintrittsstrategie in neuen Märkten darstellen kann. Die Dissertation von Stephanie Busch greift diese Fragestellung auf und verfolgt dabei zwei Ziele. Zum einen soll der bisher unzureichende Erkenntnisstand zu Pionier-Vorteilen in der wissenschaftlichen Diskussion erweitert werden. Das zweite Ziel der Arbeit besteht in der empirischen Überprüfung von Pionier-Vorteile mit Hilfe qualitativer Fallstudienuntersuchungen von sechs deutschen Start-up-Unternehmungen in der Internet-Ökonomie. Der Sammelband prasentiert Beitrage des internationalen Kongresses Die Neue Judische Schule, der im Mai 2004 an der Universitat Potsdam stattfand und an dem renommierte Wissenschaftler aus Deutschland, Israel, den USA, Russland, Grossbritannien und Schweden teilnahmen. Ihre Arbeiten beruhren verschiedenste Aspekte der Forschung uber dieses Thema. Besonders wichtig war die Klarung der Quellenlage: Die Dokumente der Neuen Judischen Schule sind durch politische Umstande und bewegte Schicksale der Komponisten in der ganzen Welt zerstreut. Bis vor einigen Jahren waren sie aus verschiedenen Grunden oft gar nicht zuganglich, manchmal war nicht einmal der Verbleib der Nachlasse bekannt. Zum Kongress waren Vertreter von vier wichtigen Archiven eingeladen, ihre Vortrage bilden den ersten Teil des Bandes. Die Beitrage des zweiten Teils belegen eindrucksvoll, dass die Neue Judische Schule keineswegs auf Russland beschrankt war, und dass ihr unmittelbarer Einfluss weit in die Nachkriegszeit hinein reichte. Im Mittelpunkt des dritten Teils stehen herausragende Protagonisten der Neuen Judischen Schule. Fur judische Kunstmusik war die osteuropaische judische Musiktradition die wichtigste Inspirationsquelle. Diesem Thema ist der vierte Teil gewidmet. Der letzte, funfte Teil befasst sich mit den aktuellen Entwicklungen auf dem Gebiet judischer Kunstmusik im Zusammenhang mit der Geschichte der Neuen Judischen Schule und ihren Traditionen.
