This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1920 edition. Excerpt: ... second and third persons singular of the subjunctive the analogical proportion stands: vofiev veTt: veiS ve i = Xvuptv Xurjre: xutjs Xujj. Since the inducing forms, Xuets and Xuei, contained, not diphthongs, but simple vowels of the quality which appeared elsewhere in the paradigm (pp. 124 ff.), the restored subjunctive forms contained, not 77i, but a monophthong of the same quality as that of the second person plural. Consequently we find very frequently such subjunctives as 8odrj, P. Petr. ii. 2. 1. 10 (260 B.C.). The frequent spelling with 77i in the subjunctive forms of late inscriptions and papyri is due in part to the influence of old documents with 77i in these forms but chiefly to the fact that the corresponding indicative forms were written with the digraph ei. The diphthongs ai and i, and also the restored 77i, lost their second element at various times in different parts of the Greek world. In Attica the loss occurred not far from 200 B.C.1 The change is reflected in the form of Greek loan-words in Latin; Thraex, tragoedus, etc., were borrowed in early times, while Thrax, Thracia, odeum are later forms. We have the explicit testimony of Strabo that i was silent in the dative singular (of the first and second declensions, of course): xiv. p. 648: Towoi yap x DEGREESpis rov i ypavaiKrjv alrlav obK exov.2 In the fifth century 77i, ai, and wi were all true diphthongs, and at and wt remained such in the fourth 1 Meisterhans-Schwyzer, p. 67. 2" For many write the datives without the i, and reject the custom (of writing them) which has no basis in nature." century. The first member of each was probably long and of the same quality as when monophthongal. Hence wi, rather...

One of the main cultural consequences of the contacts between Islam and the West has been the borrowing of hundreds of words, mostly of Arabic but also of other important languages of the Islamic world, such as Persian, Turkish, Berber, etc. by Western languages. Such loanwords are particularly abundant and relevant in the case of the Iberian Peninsula because of the presence of Islamic states in it for many centuries; their study is very revealing when it comes to assess the impact of those states in the emergence and shaping of Western civilization. Some famous Arabic scholars, above all R. Dozy, have tackled this task in the past, followed by other attempts at increasing and improving his pioneering work; however, the progresses achieved during the last quarter of the 20th c., in such fields as Andalusi and Andalusi Romance dialectology and lexicology made it necessary to update all the available information on this topic and to offer it in English.

This volume, originally published in 1970, presents a survey of the languages spoken in an area extending from the Atlantic coast at the Sengal River eastward to the Lake Chad region. The area covered by this volume is mainly a goegraphical one, so it follows that not all the languages included are related to one another, though a certain degree of homogeneity appears.

This book, The Origin of Language: Tracing the Evolution of the Mother Tongue, originally published in 1994 by John Wiley & Sons, was written in a more popular style, accessible to an educated general audience, than the more scholarly and academic tome of a similar title, On the Origin of Languages: Studies in Linguistic Taxonomy, published the same year. In The Origin of Language Ruhlen laid out the principles of linguistic genetic classification, i.e., classifying languages into families according to common origins rather than typological features. Ruhlen showed how simple this can be, especially for languages that have diverged for a few millennia, by juxtaposing short lists of basic (non-cultural) words like eye, fire, and tongue. He also showed that the same methods can be used to postulate older and deeper families, often called "macro-families" or "macrophyla," by comparing reconstructed forms from lower-level families. Such deeper families (e.g., Nostratic, Dene-Caucasian, Nilo-Saharan, Austric) are generally more controversial than lower-level families, but Ruhlen did not shy from discussing them if he thought the evidence supported them. Ruhlen was also interested in other fields of anthropology, such as archaeology and human genetics, and brought these fields into play.
