Opera in the Tropics is an engaging exploration of theater with music in Brazil from the mid 1500s to the early 1820s. Author Rogério Budasz delves into the practices of the actors, singers, poets, and composers who created and performed Jesuit moral plays, Spanish comedias, and Portuguese vernacular operas and entremezes during the colonial period, as well as the Italian operas that celebrated the new independent nation in 1822. A Brazilian producer claimed in 1825 that the goal of music-theater was to instruct, entertain, and distract the population. Budasz argues that this threefold goal had in fact been present throughout the colonial period, in different combinations and with different purposes, at the hands of missionaries, intellectuals, bureaucrats, political leaders, and cultural producers. While Budasz demonstrates a continuity from Portuguese theatrical practices, primarily through the circulation of artists and repertory, he also examines a number of localized departures from the metropolitan model, particularly in the ethnic and gender profile of theatrical workers, in the modifications determined by local tastes, priorities, and materials, and in the political use of theater as an ideological and civilizing tool within the paradoxical context of a slave society. Michele Barbieri pensa di essere una brava persona. Ha trentasette anni, vive a Torino e lavora con poco entusiasmo in una casa editrice che pubblica costosissimi e invendibili libri d’arte, la cui unica attrattiva attuale, soprattutto a livello di social, dopo anni gloriosi è rappresentata dalla Sala Cuccioli, dove i dipendenti possono rilassarsi accarezzando cagnolini. Michele è un tipo ironico, che spesso non prende abbastanza sul serio le situazioni. Convive con Sandra, che di mestiere fa la blogger, ma i suoi (scarsi) introiti sono dovuti principalmente ai prodotti che le aziende le mandano da recensire e che lei rivende su eBay. I due hanno una figlia, Cthulhu, concepita (per errore) quando la relazione era ancora agli inizi. Il nome della bambina, preso dai romanzi di H.P. Lovecraft, arriva da uno scherzo degli amici di Michele in risposta a Sandra, che sul blog aveva fatto un sondaggio per decidere il nome della bambina. E poiché Sandra il blog e internet sono tutto, aveva accettato quel nome in quanto «verdetto della rete». Sandra infatti è ossessionata dall’idea che un giorno scriverà il «post decisivo», che diventerà virale e le spalancherà tutte le porte: la ospiteranno in tv, avrà una parte in un reality, le chiederanno di scrivere un romanzo… Tra lei e Michele serpeggia una tensione latente: lui non è interessato al web, e lei pensa che disprezzi il suo blog e preferirebbe si trovasse un lavoro «normale». L’impressione che danno, più di essere una coppia, è di essere due colleghi che si occupano di una bambina. I momenti di affetto sono rari, così come il sesso. Un giorno, mentre sta attraversando le strisce pedonali, Michele rischia di essere travolto da un’auto di passaggio. Non succede nulla, ma lui ha una reazione violenta e, trovato un sampietrino per terra, lo scaglia contro la vettura. Altrettanto istintivamente, Michele fugge, non prima di essersi accorto che una ragazza accanto a lui ha visto tutta la scena. Quando Michele torna a casa, scopre attraverso Sandra che un «pazzo» in centro a Torino ha scagliato un cubetto di porfido contro un’anziana signora, ferendola in modo molto grave. Qualcuno però ha documentato la scena su un post che è diventato virale su Facebook. L’autrice è la rivale storica di Sandra, la blogger MorganaScrive. È proprio MorganaScrive la ragazza che l’ha visto, e il post è una descrizione di Michele, che però si sente temporaneamente scagionato, visto che MorganaScrive ha calcato un po’ troppo la mano su certi aspetti che lui non riconosce. Michele decide di continuare la sua vita come se nulla fosse successo, anche se l’episodio del sampietrino lo pone di fronte a delle domande su se stesso – sono un violento? sono un frustrato? Intanto, per non rischiare di essere riconosciuto, cambia il proprio look: si taglia i capelli e si compra un completo elegante da indossare al lavoro. Questo cambiamento però ha delle conseguenze inaspettate.
