This is a first-hand account of the authors grandfather, Guy Mainwaring Knocker and his experiences as a pilot in the R.F.C. in the First World War written as a series of letters and diary entries. He wrote letters virtually every day to his family, while he trained in England and was in service in France, and often illustrated them with little sketches. Guy was a gifted artist, particularly pencil and Pen & ink, and also an excellent photographer. He flew with No 65 (Fighter) Squadron that was formed in June, 1916 as a fighter squadron, and flew to France in March 1917 in time to play a prominent part in the air operations during the Battles of Arras. In June 1917, the squadron moved to Calais for special patrol work in the Dover Straits area, to intercept enemy aircraft raiding England.

Born on a Mississippi farm, Pvt. Eugene McLaurin had reached 30 years of age when his unit began its advance on the Western Front. This book aims to tell the story of James Austin Bowman as he navigated the Western Front during World War I. The book utilizes two main types of historical documents: the personal diary and the letters to his wife. During his time on the Western Front, Bowman wrote in a personal diary about the uncertainty and daily life of a soldier inching closer to war. This chapter aims to analyze the diary within the story of James Bowman and the 91st Division. The second chapter allows the diary to serve as a guide to retell the story of James Bowman as the 91st Division inched closer to the Meuse Argonne Offensive. The third chapter examines a small but revealing and representative portion of the letters that James wrote to Evelyn on the Western Front. The letters offer a glimpse into their relationship as a newly married couple and how open he is to be sharing his thoughts and emotions during the fight of his life. The fourth chapter examines the impact of war on my family and how James Bowman's experience during World War I affected his family in shaping their worldview.

Decades before Americans became familiar with the term “embedded journalist,” a young cartoonist named Francis Webster embodied that role when he served as a volunteer infantryman during World War I.
