"The Haunted House" was first published in 1859 for the weekly periodical "All the Year Round". It is a "portmanteau" story, with Dickens writing the opening and closing framing stories, and contributions from five other well-known authors of the time.Contents:The Haunted HouseThe Mortals In The HouseThe Ghost in the Clock RoomThe Ghost in the Double RoomThe Ghost in the Picture RoomThe Ghost in the Cupboard RoomThe Ghost in Master B.'s RoomThe Ghost in the Garden RoomThe Ghost in the Corner RoomDickens's opening story, "The Mortals in the House", demonstrates his mastery of storytelling and characterisation. When the narrator sees a deserted house from his railway carriage he becomes determined to take up residence there. However, the house is said to be haunted and the servants gradually become agitated. The narrator sends them away and invites a group of his friends to stay with him and fend for themselves. On Christmas Eve the friends arrive with the aim of discovering evidence of the supernatural. Secluded in their rooms for the holiday, the friends agree to keep silent about any ghostly experiences until they gather on Twelfth Night. The ghosts the characters see have no connection with the house, and are not even really ghosts; the stories are of injustice, terror, or regret. The tales are all very different, but each has an element of the strange and scary. Some of the house guests have heard stories from ghosts while others have had out-of-body experiences. Wilkie Collins tells a seafaring story of Spanish pirates and the torment of a candle that, as it burns, takes the narrator ever closer to explosion and death. Dickens himself contributes "The Ghost in Master B's Room", a very peculiar tale of the ghost of innocence that hints at the author's own feelings of melancholy. Elizabeth Gaskell contributes a strong story of working people in the north of England. The closing story, "The Ghost in the Corner Room", is again by Dickens.Today, "The Haunted House of 1859" is one of the attractions at Dickens World in Chatham, Kent. This edition of "The Haunted House" contains additional material:* A Brief Biography Of Charles Dickens* A Few Quotes Of Charles Dickens* A Brief Biography Of Elizabeth Gaskell* A Few Quotes Of Elizabeth Gaskell* A Brief Biography Of Wilkie Collins* A Few Quotes Of Wilkie Collins

First published in the year 1853, the present novel 'Bleak House' is one of Charles Dickens's major works. The story is told partly by the novel's heroine, Esther Summerson, and partly by an omniscient narrator. At the centre of Bleak House is a long-running legal case, Jarndyce and Jarndyce, which came about because someone wrote several conflicting wills. Dickens uses this case to satirise the English judicial system, and he makes use of his earlier experiences as a law clerk and as a litigant seeking to enforce copyright on his earlier books.

This volume presents 1,592 letters, 668 of them previously unpublished, for the years 1850 to 1852. This was a time of great activity for Dickens, who completed the serial publication of David Copperfield, began work on Bleak House, successfully established the weekly Household Words (in which his own serial A Child's History of England appeared), and wrote about 100 articles and stories for the journal, including many uncollected pieces. In April 1851 he and Sir Edward Bulwer Lytton founded the Guild of Literature and Art, a scheme to help writers and artists. He also suffered a number of personal blows: the deaths of his father, his baby daughter Dora, and two of his close friends, Richard Watson and Alfred D'Orsay; there was also anxiety over the illness of his wife Catherine.
