Il faudrait de l’amour dans tout dictionnaire, mais pour la musique plus encore. En France, tout le monde adore la musique, mais personne ne l’aime, disait Berlioz. On ne l’aime pas, puisqu’on ne cherche pas à mieux la connaître. Combien de beaux livres où on peut mieux voir la peinture ! La musique, on ne peut pas. Elle n’offre pas d’images, et elle passe. La mémoire ne fixe pas si facilement ce qui passe dans l’instant même, même si cela plaît. D’où l’utilité extrême, pour la musique, d’un guide. Surtout il a pris le temps d’apprendre à en parler en familier, qui trouve les bonnes images. La musique est donc une affaire de cœur autant que d’oreilles. Il faut savoir se mettre à son écoute, c’est-à-dire se disposer à la recevoir. Combien de mots, de noms communs que la musique s’est appropriés, nous les rendant du coup mystérieux : la mélodie, le rythme, la tonalité, le timbre, même le silence ! On en retrouve le sens, un sens qu’on puisse comprendre. Alors on fait plus qu’adorer la musique : l’aimer, la goûter comme un mystère accessible et permis.

The creation of new lexical units and patterns has been studied in different research frameworks, focusing on either system-internal or system-external aspects, from which no comprehensive view has emerged. The volume aims to fill this gap by studying dynamic processes in the lexicon – understood in a wide sense as not being necessarily limited to the word level – by bringing together approaches directed to morphological productivity as well as approaches analyzing general types of lexical innovation and the role of discourse-related factors. The papers deal with ongoing changes as well as with historical processes of change in different languages and reflect on patterns and specific subtypes of lexical innovation as well as on their external conditions and the speakers’ motivations for innovating. Moreover, the diffusion and conventionalization of innovations will be addressed. In this way, the volume contributes to understanding the complex interplay of structural, cognitive and functional factors in the lexicon as a highly dynamic domain.

Historians of French politics, art, philosophy and literature have long known the tensions and fascinations of Louis XV's reign, the 1750s in particular. David Charlton's study comprehensively re-examines this period, from Rameau to Gluck and elucidates the long-term issues surrounding opera. Taking Rousseau's Le Devin du Village as one narrative centrepiece, Charlton investigates this opera's origins and influences in the 1740s and goes on to use past and present research to create a new structural model that explains the elements of reform in Gluck's tragédies for Paris. Charlton's book opens many new perspectives on the musical practices and politics of the period, including the Querelle des Bouffons. It has been translated from the French original into German, Spanish, Italian, and Russian, and now at long last into English as well. The volume contains a comprehensive approach to the syntax of natural languages, an approach that is foundational for an entire stream in the modern study of syntax and grammar. This stream is known today as dependency grammar (DG). Drawing examples from dozens of languages, many of which he was proficient in, Tesnière presents insightful analyses of numerous phenomena of syntax. Among the highlights are the concepts of valency and head-initial vs. head-final languages. These concepts are now taken for granted by most modern theories of syntax, even by phrase structure grammars, which represent, in a sense, the opposite sort of approach to syntax from what Tesnière was advocating.
