This collection of essays makes a significant contribution to the historiography of the end of the Cold War. Research on the causes and consequences of the end of the Cold War is constantly growing. Initially, it was dominated by fairly simplistic, and often politically motivated, debates revolving around the role played by major "winners" and "losers". This volume addresses a number of diverse issues and seeks to challenge several "common wisdoms" about the end of the Cold War. Together, the contributions provide insights on the role of personalities as well as the impact of transnational movements and forces on the unexpected political transformations of the late 1980s and early 1990s. Geographically, the chapters largely focus on the United States, Europe, with special emphasis on Germany, and the Soviet Union. Was bedeutete "sozialistische Waffenbrüderschaft" unter den Bedingungen des Ost-West-Konflikts? Um die Rolle der Streitkräfte des Warschauer Paktes militärgeschichtlich einordnen zu können, müssen sie von drei Seiten betrachtet werden: Als die bewaffnete Macht eines Staates prägten sie die nationale Pfadabhängigkeit; als Teil der östlichen Militärallianz waren sie in Bündnisstrukturen eingebunden und mit dem sowjetischen Führungsanspruch konfrontiert; schließlich wirkten sich bilaterale Beziehungen auf das jeweilige Militär aus. Der gemeinsame Blick auf die Streitkräfte der DDR und Rumäniens von den 1950er Jahren bis zum Ende des Kalten Krieges lässt dieses Beziehungsdreieck deutlich erkennen. Deutsche und rumänische Historiker untersuchen zum einen die Kontakte führender Militärs auf der politischen Ebene, zum anderen die Teilnahme beider Seiten an Manövern des Warschauer Paktes. Darüber hinaus gilt das Interesse der Militärhilfe in Afrika und im Nahen Osten. Unterm Strich wird deutlich, wie sehr die Nationale Volksarmee und die Armata Romana von den politischen Konjunkturen abhingen. Der politische Anspruch auf sozialistische Solidarität im Sinne des proletarischen Internationalismus stand nicht selten in einem Spannungsverhältnis zu den nationalen Interessen der einzelnen Staaten. Die militärgeschichtlichen Analysen werden ergänzt durch die Präsentation ausgewählter deutscher und rumänischer Dokumente.

Unter der NS-Diktatur waren den Sportvereinen dezidiert politische Aufgaben zugedacht, gleichwohl stand das freiheitliche bürgerliche Vereinswesen im Gegensatz zu den Herrschaftsstrukturen des Regimes. Die NS-Politik verfolgte eine ebenso umfassende wie radikale "Gleichschaltung" des Sports, musste die totale Umsetzung dieses Plans aus taktischen Gründen jedoch auf die Zeit nach dem "Endsieg" vertagen. Viele Details der Gleichschaltungsprozesse im Fußballsport unter der NS-Diktatur sind weitgehend unbekannt. Der Band schließt anhand neuer Archivrecherchen einige dieser Lücken und zeigt ferner Kontinuitäten zwischen den beiden deutschen Diktaturen auf. Der Fokus soll dabei nicht nur auf den Anspruch des Regimes gelegt werden, den Sport der Partei zu unterwerfen, sondern auch darauf, inwieweit er in die Tat umgesetzt wurde.
