Im ausgehenden 18. Jahrhundert formierte sich eine europäische Amor-und-Psyche-Konjunktur in Kunst, Wissenschaft und Alltagskultur, die - und hier setzt die Studie an - die Kluft zwischen Text und Bild zu schließen versuchte. Diese Auseinandersetzung mit dem Mythos speiste sich aus dem modernen Erkenntnisinteresse an der Pubertät als einer eigenen Lebensphase und an dem zunehmend diffuser werdenden Begriff der Seele (griech. Psyche). Von der fragmentarischen Überlieferung wurde auf einen geheimen Mysterienkult um Liebe und Jugend geschlossen, der einst bestenfalls in rätselhaften Allegorien hätte überliefert werden dürfen. Der bildenden Kunst und Literatur kam nun die Aufgabe zu, diesen Urmythos im Dialog mit den Wissenschaften ästhetisch zu (re-)konstruieren.
