The book offers a new, original look at the great European modernist Paul Klee and the interplay of word and image in the work he produced after WWI, when the European avant-garde was at its most adamant. Bourneuf asks: why was it that Klee immersed himself in crossings of image and text at the same time that so much avant-garde art focused fiercely on the visual? She proposes that Klee created forms that hover between the pictorial and the written to provoke the viewer to look slowly and contemplatively, a mode of viewing the artist saw as both analogous to reading and threatened by new technological media such as film, mass printing, telephones, and radio. Bourneuf demonstrates how Klee s concern for the literary aspects of visual art is both the motive for and the means of his ironic play with modernist art theories and practices."

In der Kunstwissenschaft ist nach wie vor umstritten, ob und wie sie sich mit dem Thema 'Farbe' auseinander setzen soll. "Sprechen über Farbe" erörtert, wie Kunsttheoretiker in der Vergangenheit mit dem Thema umgegangen sind und welche methodischen Ansätze es heute gibt, adäquat die Farbe in Bildern aus vergangenen Epochen zu analysieren. Die vorgestellten analytischen Herangehensweisen zeigen, dass erst die Synthese von historischer Argumentation und formal-ästhetischer Analyse die Funktionen von Farbe im Bild umfassend herausarbeiten kann. Das methodische Problem der Farbinterpretation wird exemplarisch an Rubens und Poussin aufgerollt. An ihren Bildern entzündete sich im 17. Jahrhundert die querelle du coloris. Dieser kunsttheoretische Streit entzweite die Mitglieder der französischen Academie royale de peinture et de la sculpture und ging als heftigste intellektuelle Auseinandersetzung über Farbe in die Theoriegeschichte ein. In der querelle du coloris wurden bereits viele Aspekte thematisiert, die die kunsthistorische Farbforschung nach wie vor herausfordern, z.B. die Schwierigkeit, Farbkompositionen in Sprache zu 'übersetzen', die Emotionalität des Farbenerlebens, die Veränderlichkeit von Farben eines Bildes durch äußere Einflüsse (z.B. Alterung oder variierende Beleuchtung) oder differierende Konzepte über die Bedeutungen einzelner Farben. Mit Rubens und Poussin werden zwei Maler gegenübergestellt, deren Farbgestaltung unterschiedlicher nicht sein könnte. Die Bilder Poussins mit ihren klar voneinander geschiedenen Farben zeigen besonders deutlich bedeutungstragende und ordnende Funktionen der Farbe. Die Bilder Rubens' mit ihren dynamisch ineinander fließenden Farben verdeutlichen dagegen vor allem die wirkungsästhetische Kraft der Farbe.
