Excerpt from Die Ganerben, Die Gerechtigkeit Gottes: Zwei Geschichten; Edited With Notes and a Complete Vocabulary On the other hand, many of the passages where young learners require help which their dictionaries do not give, cannot with most advantage be explained in notes. Very often a short note can hardly take any other form than that of a translation, or of an equivalent in isolated appli cation to the particular passage, which is liable to be unthinkingly adopted and mechanically applied. In a vocabulary, the same information may often be incorporated with kindred matter, and given in a form which will compel the learner to make use of his powers of observation and of discriminating selection. In short, a vocabulary seems to be the best means of minimising the mere mechanical labour of the young student, while relieving him as little as possible of the necessity of thinking and judging for himself. With this explanation, those who make use of the present volume may perhaps take the absence of a note, where one might seem to be called for, as a hint to examine the vocabulary a little more closely. As a rule, every article has been written after a collocation of all the passages in the text in which the word or expression occurs. Karl Barth’s commentary on Paul’s epistle to the Romans, in its two editions (1919 and 1922), is one of the most significant works published in Christian theology in the 20th century. This book, which landed “like a bombshell on the theologians’ playground,” still deserves close scrutiny one hundred years after its publication. In this volume, New Testament scholars, philosophers of religion and systematic theologians ponder the intricacies of Barth’s “expressionistic” commentary, pointing out the ways in which Barth interprets Paul’s epistle for his own day, how this actualized interpretation of the apostle’s message challenged the theology of Barth’s time, and how some of the insights he articulated in 1919 and in 1922 have shaped Christian theology up to our day. With his commentary, the young Swiss pastor paved the way for a renewed, intensely theological interpretation of the Scriptures. The volume thus centers of some of the key themes which run through Barth’s commentary: faith as divine gift beyond any human experience or psychological data, the Easter event as the turning point of the world’s history, God’s judgment and mercy and God’s one Word in Jesus Christ. This volume represents a major contribution to the interpretation of Karl Barth’s early thought.

Für ein glückliches Leben muss man Verstandestugenden und (durch Erziehung und Gewöhnung) Charaktertugenden ausbilden, wozu ein entsprechender Umgang mit Begierden und Emotionen gehört. "Das Organon": Der Themenbereich Sprache, Logik und Wissen ist vor allem in den Schriften behandelt, die traditionell unter dem Titel Organon zusammengestellt sind. "Über die Dichtkunst": In seiner Theorie der Dichtung behandelt Aristoteles insbesondere die Tragödie, deren Funktion aus seiner Sicht darin besteht, Furcht und Mitleid zu erregen, um beim Zuschauer eine Reinigung von diesen Emotionen zu bewirken (katharsis). "Die Physik": Sie befasst sich mit der Erklärung und Erläuterung (Definition) einiger grundlegender Begriffe, die bei der Beschreibung von Naturvorgängen im täglichen Leben gebraucht werden. Die wichtigsten davon sind: Raum, Zeit, Bewegung und Ursache. Es handelt sich nicht um eine mathematische Darlegung der Grundzüge der Natur in heutigem Sinne.

Walter Benjamin and Gershom Scholem are regarded as two of the most influential Jewish thinkers of the twentieth century. This book is about authority, more precisely, about figures of authority. The editors have put together an international group of renowned scholars to discuss the emergence of modern notions of authority from different angles. Modern authority is no longer legitimated by status and social position, but rather by institutional affiliation and performance.
