The study of Ezra-Nehemiah has been revolutionized in recent years by a growing rejection of the long-established belief that it was composed as part of the Chronicler's work. That shift in scholarly paradigms has re-opened many questions of origin and purpose, and this thesis attempts to establish an answer to the most important of these: the question of authorship. Here, Kyungjin Min argues that Ezra-Nehemiah most likely originated in a Levitical group that received Persian backing during the late-fifth century BCE and that valued the ideologies of decentralization of power, unity and cooperation among social groups, and dissatisfaction with the religious status quo.

Die Arbeit untersucht den Einfluss der Tora auf die Chronikbücher in einer zweifachen Perspektive. Im ersten Hauptteil der Arbeit werden alle Referenzstellen des Begriffs to^ra ̄h auf ihre Bedeutung und ihren Verwendungszusammenhang hin analysiert. Im zweiten Hauptteil der Arbeit wird anhand von fünf synoptischen Studien zum Kult-Personal (1Chr 5,27-6,38), zum Kult-Gegenstand der Bundeslade (1Chr 13-16) zum Kult-Ort (1Chr 21) zum Kult-Kalender (2Chr 5-7) sowie zur Kult-Handlung (2Chr 26) der Nachweis geführt, dass die Tora nicht nur begrifflich zitiert wird, sondern sich auch integral auf die Textkonstitution der Chronik auswirkt. Im Gespräch mit der rezenten Pentateuch-Forschung bestätigt sich die Annahme, dass zwischen den späten Texten des Pentateuchs und den Texten der Chronikbücher enge Verbindungen bestehen und die Schriftgelehrten zur selben Epoche gehören. Die Chronik ist demnach eine Reformulierung der Geschichte des judäischen Königtums aus dem Geiste der Tora.

Der Band bringt den von Sigmund von Birken selbst gesammelten Teil seiner lateinischen Produktion in die Ausgabe ein. Die chronologisch angelegte und von ihm selbst handschriftlich geführte Sammlung BETULETUM enthält von 1645 bis 1662 entstandene lateinische Gedichte, Briefe und Andachtstexte Sigmund von Birkens. Sie sollte weitergeführt werden. Das ergibt sich aus Fortsetzungslisten mit Titeln und zwei chronologisch an diese Listen anschließenden, ihrerseits chronologisch geführten Arbeitsbüchern. Die in den Listen genannten und in den Arbeitsbüchern enthaltenen und zur Aufnahme bezeichneten Texte sind, der Planung des Autors gemäß, in den Band aufgenommen. Die Sammlung lässt gut erkennen, bei welchen Gelegenheiten und zu welchen Zwecken sich die Autoren des 17. Jahrhunderts der lateinischen Sprache bedienten. Im Kommentarteil werden alle Texte in ihr zeitliches, soziales bzw. epistolographisches Umfeld eingeordnet, erklärt und übersetzt. Der Band erschließt der Wissenschaft eine bislang gänzlich unbekannte Facette des Birken’schen Werkes und ermöglicht neue Erkenntnisse hinsichtlich der sozialen Funktion von Literatur im 17. Jahrhundert.
