Seminal essays written by Baudrillard for a journal devoted to a radical leftist critique of architecture, urbanism, and everyday life. The Utopie group was born in 1966 at Henri Lefebvre's house in the Pyrenees. The eponymous journal edited by Hubert Tonka brought together sociologists Jean Baudrillard, René Lourau, and Catherine Cot, architects Jean Aubert, Jean-Paul Jungmann, Antoine Stinco, and landscape architect Isabelle Auricoste. Over the next decade, both in theory and in practice, the group articulated a radical ultra-leftist critique of architecture, urbanism, and everyday life. Utopia Deferred collects all of the essays Jean Baudrillard published in Utopie as well as recent interviews with Jean Baudrillard and Hubert Tonka.Utopie served as a workshop for Baudrillard's thought. Many of the essays he first published in Utopie were seminal for some of his most shockingly original books: For a Critique of the Political Economy of the Sign, The Mirror of Production, Simulations, Symbolic Exchange and Death, and In the Shadow of the Silent Majorities. But Utopie was also a topical journal and a political one; the topics of these essays are often torn from the headlines of the tumultuous decade following the uprisings of May 1968.

Der Staatsroman »Utopia« formuliert die Hoffnung auf eine bessere soziale Ordnung. Der Roman prägte den Begriff Utopie in seiner heutigen Bedeutung. Im ersten Teil von »Utopia« übt Thomas Morus Kritik an den gesellschaftlichen Zuständen in England und Europa um das Jahr 1516, dem Erscheinungsjahr des Romans. Um diese Kritik nicht selbst aussprechen zu müssen, bedient sich Thomas Morus eines Kunstgriffs: Er gibt vor, auf Reisen einen Weisen getroffen zu haben, mit dem er sich über die englische Gesellschaft unterhalten habe. In »Utopia« wird der Dialog zwischen Thomas Morus und dem Weisen widergegeben. Die gesellschaftskritischen Passagen des Romans legt Thomas Morus im ersten Teil des Romans dem Weisen in den Mund. Im zweiten Teil zeigt Thomas Morus den Gegenentwurf zu den kritisierten Zuständen: die Insel »Utopia« mit ihrer intakten Sozialordnung und ihren glücklichen Bewohnern. Auf der Insel existiert eine ideale Gesellschaft. Den Einwohnern von »Utopia« wird ein abwechslungsreiches Leben zwischen Stadt und Land geboten. Wohlstand lässt sich durch leichte, zeitlich begrenzte Arbeit erreichen. Jeder hat Gelegenheit zur kulturellen Bildung. Durch verschiedene Hinweise macht Thomas Morus deutlich, dass es sich um einen Traum, eben: um eine Utopie handelt. Indem Thomas Morus das Paradiesische seiner Utopie extrem überzeichnet, ergeben sich einige beinahe humoristische Passagen. Thomas Morus lebte von 1478 bis 1535. Der literarische Erfolg von »Utopia« half ihm bei seiner politischen Karriere. 1529 wurde er englischer Lordkanzler. Wegen seines Einsatzes für die katholische Kirche in Zeiten der Reformation fiel er in Ungnade und wurde hingerichtet. 1935 wurde er heiliggesprochen.

The group's collaborative publications included the work of Jean Aubert, Isabelle Auricoste, Jean Baudrillard, Catherine Cot, Charles Goldblum, Jean-Paul Jungmann, Henri Lefebvre, René Lourau, Antoine Stinco, and Hubert Tonka. Offering a militant alternative to professional urban planning journals, these writers not only formulated a critique of the technocratic and administrative rule over a disabled and alienated urban society but also projected an ephemeral urban poetics. Experiments in architectural education in the post–World War II era that challenged and transformed architectural discourse and practice. In the decades after World War II, new forms of learning transformed architectural education. These radical experiments sought to upend disciplinary foundations and conventional assumptions about the nature of architecture as much as they challenged modernist and colonial norms, decentered building, imagined new roles for the architect, and envisioned participatory forms of practice. Although many of the experimental programs were subsequently abandoned, terminated, or assimilated, they nevertheless helped shape and in some sense define architectural discourse and practice. This book explores and documents these radical pedagogies and efforts to defy architecture’s status quo. The experiments include the adaptation of Bauhaus pedagogy as a means of “unlearning” under the conditions of decolonization in Africa; a movement to design for “every body,” including the disabled, by architecture students and faculty at the University of California, Berkeley; the founding of a support network for women interested in the built environment, regardless of their academic backgrounds; and a design studio in the USSR that offered an alternative to the widespread functionalist approach in Soviet design. Viewed through their dissolution and afterlife as well as through their founding stories, these projects from the last century raise provocative questions about architecture’s role in the new century.

The poetic is an abiding yet elusive qualification within the discursive system of twentieth-century French literature. No longer amenable to formal assignment, its recurrences delimit a shifting, multi-layered practice of artistic and intellectual (self- ) invention. This study attempts to outline certain durable properties of that practice by confronting it with the complex theoretical and spatial metaphor of utopia. Drawing, in particular, upon the oeuvres of Victor Segalen (1878-1919), Rene Daumal (1908-44) and Yves Bonnefoy (b. 1923), it traces poetic work - work done in support of poetic difference - along the social, physical and textual axes of what is argued to be a sustained and radically inclusive utopian practice within the literary field. The complex utopian quality of poetic work is linked to the cultural persistence of the poetic as a simple attribute within literary practice. In uncovering this link, the study encourages revised understandings of both the poetic and the utopian in the modern French literary context
