Inhaltsangabe: Einleitung: Problemstellung: Durch das gemeinsame Zusammenarbeiten von Menschen in Organisationen über längere Zeit hinweg bildet sich ein gemeinschaftliches Verständnis heraus. Daraus lässt sich schließen, dass Organisationen, genauso wie einzelne Personen, über eine bestimmte unverwechselbare Identität verfügen. Als minimaler Konsens kann organisationale Identität dabei als das Selbstverständnis einer Organisation und ihrer Mitglieder angenommen werden. Im Verlauf der Arbeit soll geklärt werden, was genau unter dem Begriff der organisationalen Identität verstanden werden kann. Die Schaffung eines grundlegenden Identitäts- und Organisationsverständnisses stellt dabei die Voraussetzung für eine Herantastung an das Phänomen organisationaler Identität dar. Darüber hinaus soll erörtert werden, ob und unter welchen Annahmen organisationale Identität entsteht und verändert werden kann, oder ob Identität, wie in einigen Ansätzen postuliert wird, a priori existiert. Dafür wird der Einfluss verschiedener Konstrukte und Kontexte auf die organisationale Identität einer genaueren Betrachtung unterzogen. Zudem soll untersucht werden, welche Bedeutung der Identität in Organisationen zukommt und welche Auswirkungen sie auf organisationales Handeln haben kann. Anhand der Argumentation soll schließlich deutlich werden, warum das Konzept der organisationalen Identität zum Forschungsgegenstand wurde. Das Ziel der Arbeit ist es, die aufgeworfenen Fragen durch eine Literaturanalyse der organisationalen Identitätskonzepte zu beantworten und eine kritische Betrachtung der Konzeptbausteine vorzunehmen. Als Forschungsgegenstand beansprucht die Auseinandersetzung mit Identität vielfältige Disziplinen. Conceived as the meanings that individuals attach to their selves, a substantial stockpile of theory related to identities accumulated across the arts, social sciences, and humanities over many decades continues to nourish contemporary research on self-identities in organizations. In times which are more reflexive, narcissistic, and fluid, the identities of participants in organizations are increasingly less fixed and less certain, making identity issues both more salient and more interesting. Particular attention has been given to processes of identity construction, often styled 'identity work'. Research has focused on how, why, and when such processes occur, and their implications for organizing and individual, group, and organizational outcomes. This has resulted in a burgeoning stream of research from discursive, dramaturgical, symbolic, socio-cognitive, and psychodynamic perspectives that most often casts individuals' efforts to fabricate identities as intentional, relational, and consequential. Seemingly intractable debates centred on the nature of identities - their relative stability or fluidity, whether they are best regarded as coherent or fractured, positive (or not), and how they are fabricated within relations of power - combined with other conceptual issues continue to invigorate the field. However, these debates have also led to some scepticism regarding the future potential of identities research. Yet as the chapters in this Handbook demonstrate, there are considerable grounds for optimism that identity, as root metaphor, nexus concept, and means to bridge levels of analysis has significant potential to generate multiple compelling streams of theorizing in organization and management studies.

This book provides a unique insight into the learning experiences of career change professionals in teacher education. Many studies have provided a brief glimpse into the experiences of people making a career change into teaching, but this book offers an in-depth analysis of the day to day struggles and triumphs of a small group of career change students studying teacher education in Australia. This study locates teacher professional learning within a sociocultural research paradigm, highlighting the importance of social, cultural and institutional contexts in learning. Learning to become a teacher is not merely the acquisition of a set of technical skills and propositional knowledge, but a far more complex personal struggle to construct a new professional identity. This book uncovers some of the trials, tribulations and joys of becoming a teacher for those who have already worked in other careers. It examines the impact of previous career experiences on the construction of a new professional identity as a teacher. This process is discussed using the conceptual framework of learning within communities of practice. Firstly, a broad-brush picture is presented through analysis and discussion of extensive quantitative data obtained via an on-line survey, after which a small group of survey respondents provide a more nuanced exploration of their experiences as student teachers. This is followed by three case studies that delve more deeply into the experiences, frustrations and joys of being an ‘expert novice’ in teacher education. These case studies examine the stories of three career changers who provide personal insights into what it is like to be an experienced professional embarking on a new journey as a novice student teacher.
