Der Germanist Wilhelm Scherer (1841-1886) gehort zu den einflussreichsten Personlichkeiten des deutsch-osterreichischen Wissenschaftsbetriebs in der zweiten Halfte des 19. Jahrhunderts. Er scharfte das methodische Profil der Germanistik im Kontakt mit der zeitgenossischen Philosophie und Geschichtswissenschaft und setzte sich fur eine Zusammenarbeit aller Geistes- und Kulturwissenschaften ein. Als Professor in Wien, Strassburg und, seit 1877, in Berlin verwirklichte er die Offnung der Germanistik fur die Beschaftigung mit neuerer Literatur. Der umfangreiche Nachlass birgt nicht allein Material zu Scherers Biografie und Werk. Die Hinterlassenschaft stellt einen wichtigen Quellenfundus zur Fachgeschichte der Germanistik sowie anderer Disziplinen - etwa Philosophie, Geschichte und Kunstgeschichte - dar, mit deren Reprasentanten Scherer in Verbindung stand; sie ist uberdies von zentraler Bedeutung fur die Bildungs- und Mentalitatsgeschichte der Epoche. Wahrend Scherers Hauptnachlass bereits 1935 von der Preussischen Akademie der Wissenschaften ubernommen wurde, gelangte ein umfangreicher Teilnachlass mit privaten Dokumenten und Korrespondenzen erst relativ spat, 1982, in die Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin - Preussischer Kulturbesitz. Der Band umfasst einen gemeinsamen Abdruck der Verzeichnisse zum erst jungst erschlossenen Teilnachlass und zu dem in der Forschung seit langem bekannten Hauptnachlass, der sich heute im Archiv der Berlin-Brandenburgischen Akademie der Wissenschaften befindet. Die detaillierten Verzeichnisse zu Scherers Manuskripten, Lebenszeugnissen und Korrespondenzen werden durch Vorworte zur Bestandsgeschichte eingeleitet und sind durch ein kommentiertes Namensregister sowie weitere Materialien eingehend erschlossen.

Ethnic Identities in the Land of the Pharaohs deals with ancient Egyptian concept of collective identity, various groups which inhabited the Egyptian Nile Valley and different approaches to ethnic identity in the last two hundred years of Egyptology. The aim is to present the dynamic processes of ethnogenesis of the inhabitants of the land of the pharaohs, and to place various approaches to ethnic identity in their broader scholarly and historical context. The dominant approach to ethnic identity in ancient Egypt is still based on culture historical method. This and other theoretically better framed approaches (e.g. instrumentalist approach, habitus, postcolonial approach, ethnogenesis, intersectionality) are discussed using numerous case studies from the 3rd millennium to the 1st century BC. Finally, this Element deals with recent impact of third science revolution on archaeological research on ethnic identity in ancient Egypt.
