Nothing affects the modern economy (and society) more than decisions made in the market place, especially, but not only, decisions made by consumers. Although it is not startling to suggest that decisions made in production are affected by choices consumers make, consumers have long been viewed, not only by academic economists, as individual, isolated rational actors that make or refrain from purchases purely on the basis of narrow financial considerations. Markets are not and never were morally neutral. Market relations have always had an often taken-for-granted moral underpinning. The moralization of the markets refers to the dissolution and replacement of the conventional moral underpinnings of market conduct, for example, in the music market, financial markets, and corporate governance. It further implies not only the heightened importance of new ethical precepts, but the significant change in the role of moral ideals in market behavior. These profound transformations of economic conduct are accompanied and co-determined by societal conflicts. The moralization of markets represents thus a new stage in the social evolution of markets. The book is divided into four parts, in which the twelve chapters, written by contributors from different social science disciplines, deal with the context of the moralization of the markets; the major social institutions; and present case studies that examine European and American attitudes and behavior towards tobacco and GMO; expansion of the private and ethics in business; and how workers respond to the new corporate norms. This volume will be of interest to sociologists, economists, social scientists, and the general consumer alike.

Er opfert sich für einen realen oder imaginären Staat, vollführt in privatisierter Form, was nun einmal Sache der Volksgemeinschaft ist: Vernichtung um ihrer selbst willen. Nicht dieses Unbegreifliche ist zu begreifen, aber dessen Unbegreiflichkeit. Philosophieren heißt sterben lernen, sagt Montaigne: »Que philosopher c’est apprendre á mourir«. Gegen diese Bestimmung, die alles offen läßt, wendet sich die deutsche Ideologie vom »Sein zum Tode« und der »Freiheit des Opfers«, mit der Heidegger jeden zum Verhängnis bestimmt. So ist auch das Selbstmord-Attentat dem Freitod genau entgegengesetzt. Für den einzelnen kann die Zerstörung des eigenen Körpers der letzte Ausweg sein, Angst, Leere und Schmerz zu beenden. In diesem rein negativen Sinn ist der Selbstmord die Freiheit des Individuums. Ihn zum Mittel zu machen für Vernichtung, der alles zum Mittel wird, weil sie allein um ihrer selbst willen erfolgt, verkehrt diese Freiheit in ihr Gegenteil: Vollendung der politischen Gewalt – in einer Gesellschaft, die wesenhaft auf der Überflüssigkeit des einzelnen beruht.

Toward a Definition of Antisemitism offers new contributions by Gavin I. Langmuir to the history of antisemitism, together with some that have been published separately. The collection makes Langmuir's innovative work on the subject available to scholars in medieval and Jewish history and religious studies. The underlying question that unites the book is: what is antisemitism, where and when did it emerge, and why? After two chapters that highlight the failure of historians until recently to depict Jews and attitudes toward them fairly, the majority of the chapters are historical studies of crucial developments in the legal status of Jews and in beliefs about them during the Middle Ages. Two concluding chapters provide an overview. In the first, the author summarizes the historical developments, indicating concretely when and where antisemitism as he defines it emerged. In the second, Langmuir criticizes recent theories about prejudice and racism and develops his own general theory about the nature and dynamics of antisemitism.
