Dabei gibt es grundsätzlich verschiedene Herangehensweisen, wie man sich der Differenzierung verschiedener Liebesbegriffe nähern kann. Der Begriff "Liebe" gehört zu den am häufigsten missverstandenen, missbrauchten und trivialisierten Begriffen. Mit dem deutschen Wort Liebe werden unterschiedliche Phänomene bezeichnet, Beispiele sind Zuneigung, Sympathie, Freundschaft, Erotik, Sexualität und Leidenschaft. Diese haben allem Augenschein nach etwas mit dem Begriff Liebe gemein, zugleich gestatten sie einen Eindruck über die Bandbreite der dahinter stehenden Erscheinungen. Einigkeit herrscht darin, dass Liebe ein Begriff ist, der die engsten und stärksten Beziehungen zwischen Menschen definiert. Was genau unter Liebe zu verstehen ist, darüber wird seit Jahrhunderten wenn nicht gar seit Jahrtausenden diskutiert. Das in der griechischen Mythologie weit verbreitete Liebeskonzept ist das des Eros, das bei Platon seinen Höhepunkt erreicht. Die Liebe in der Ausgestaltung des Eros beruht auf einem grundsätzlichen Mangel, auf nicht erfüllten Bedürfnissen. Entsprechend ereilt sie den Liebenden in Form eines Heimwehs der Seele nach ihrem himmlischen Ursprung, als ihre kühne Flucht hinauf zu der über alles Vergängliche erhabenen Welt, wo all ihr Sehnen und all ihr Begehren ihre volle Befriedigung erreicht, wo ihr Streben für ewig zur Ruhe kommt.
