The growing importance of national parliaments is one feature of the stronger differentiation within the EU. Habermasian expectations of an increasing consensus on political norms seem to be invalidated by current events. In her book, in which she draws on her award-winning PhD thesis, Anja Thomas makes an important theoretical and empirical contribution to our understanding of the social causes of this development. Analysing EU affairs in the Assemblee nationale and Bundestag since 1979, she uncovers a paradox: increasing experience with the EU leads to national institutions growing in importance for MPs discourse on the role of parliaments in the EU. Revisiting social theory, in particular Max Webers old institutionalism, the author presents a new model that explains this phenomenon. Das Werk von Willy Obrist erschloss das Verständnis jenes fundamentalen Wandels des Welt- und Menschenbildes, der sich in Europa seit Beginn der Neuzeit ereignet hat. Hierbei handelt es sich um eine Mega-Mutation des Bewusstseins, bei der das seit der Steinzeit gültige Grundmuster mythischen Weltverstehens, aus dem die Religionen hervorgegangen sind, überholt und von einer völlig neuen, nunmehr empirisch fundierten Weltsicht abgelöst worden ist. Dieser Wandel ging dialektisch vor sich. Vorerst kam - als Zwischenstadium - das positivistisch-materialistische Weltbild der Aufklärung zu Stande, was zu dem rational nicht lösbaren "Dilemma zwischen Wissen und Glauben" führte. Dieses wurde dann im Verlauf des 20. Jh. - beim zweiten Schritt der Bewusstseins-Mutation - überstiegen. Daraus ergab sich eine Auffassung von Religiosität bzw. des Begriffspaares Materie und Geist, die mit dem heutigen Wissen über die Natur kompatibel ist. Mit diesem seinen letzten Buch schließt Willy Obrist sein epochales Werk ab. Er weist nach, dass und weshalb diese Evolution des Bewusstseins ihre geistigen Voraussetzungen und Wurzeln vor allem in Europa hat.
