In the immediate aftermath of World War Two, the victors were unable to agree on Germany’s fate, and the separation of the country—the result of the nascent Cold War—emerged as a de facto, if provisional, settlement. Yet East and West Germany would exist apart for half a century, making the "German question" a central foreign policy issue—and given the war-torn history between the two countries, this was felt no more keenly than in France. The reunification of Germany in 1989-90 was one of the most unexpected and momentous events of the twentieth century. The Cold War began in Europe in the mid-1940s and ended there in 1989. Debates on the role of Christian Democracy in Central and Eastern Europe too often remain strongly tied to national historiographies. Warum gab Gorbatschow nicht nur den Deutschen die Einheit, sondern beließ das vereinte Deutschland auch in der NATO. Erstmals liegt hier eine umfassende deutschsprachige Untersuchung über die Verhandlungen der Jahre 1989/90 zwischen den beiden deutschen Staaten, den drei Westmächten und der Sowjetunion vor, die Antworten auf alle relevanten Fragen gibt. Dabei wartete Gorbatschow mit verblüffenden Vorschlägen auf, die auch heute noch überaus diskussionswürdig sind.
