¿Por qué no usar mayúsculas o minúsculas cuando corresponde hacerlo? El empleo de mayúsculas y de minúsculas constituye un tema arduo que carece de fácil solución, sobre todo, cuando, al escribir, prima la subjetividad a causa de la premura, el gusto, la intención literaria o la persistente ignorancia. También cada país de lengua española las usa de acuerdo con sus normas locales, y no siempre hay coincidencias con la norma panhispánica. Con este libro, cuyo objetivo es orientar al lector, tratamos de contrastar, en algunos casos, la norma panhispánica con la norma argentina. Y decimos «en algunos casos» porque, a veces, el empleo de mayúsculas y de minúsculas concuerda en ambas normas; otras no. Cuando no se da la coincidencia, se aclara cuál es el uso extendido en la Argentina, que no debe considerarse incorrecto, ya que es parte de la norma local.

El concepto de paratexto fue introducido por Gérard Genette para describir «aquello por lo cual un texto se hace libro y se propone como tal a sus lectores, y, más generalmente, al público. Más que de un límite o de una frontera cerrada, se trata aquí de un umbral […], que ofrece a quien sea la posibilidad de entrar o retroceder». El paratexto comprende, entonces, todo lo que no es el texto propiamente dicho, es decir, todo lo que no es contenido de la obra: la elección del formato del libro, los cortes, el forro, el título, el subtítulo, la tapa, la retiración de tapa, el lomo, las páginas de guarda, la portadilla, la contraportada, la portada, la página de créditos, la dedicatoria, la página de agradecimientos, el epígrafe, el prólogo, la introducción, el epílogo o ultílogo, las notas, las ilustraciones, los apéndices, el glosario, los índices, la bibliografía, la lista de abreviaturas, la fe de erratas, el colofón, la contratapa, la retiración de contratapa, las diferentes tipografías (cuerpos, estilos de letras), los espacios, el gramaje del papel. El cuerpo del texto es, pues, el significado. El paratexto sostiene el mensaje; es la caja que lo guarda y que lo presenta.
