In A Apologia (“The Apology”) in which João Soares de Brito defends the poetry of the prince of poets of Spain, Luís de Camões is enmeshed in a controversy which reveals his importance and shows how he was read in the 17th century. This study aims to shed light on a series of aspects concerning the critical reception of Camões during this period, not only with regard to the Graeco-Latin matrix on which he drew (particularly Aristotle and Horace), but also to the updating that took place during the literary Baroque. The full text of the Apology is published in appendix, thus making accessible a work which has not been published since the princeps edition of 1641 by the Lisbon publisher Lourenço de Anveresf

Ana Cristina Cesar (1952-1983) has posthumously become one of Brazil’s best known avant-garde poets. After her suicide in 1983, her innovative, mythic, and dreamlike poetry has greatly influenced subsequent generations of writers. At Your Feet was originally published as a poetic sequence and later became part of a longer hybrid work— sometimes prose, sometimes verse—documenting the life and mind of a forcefully active literary woman. There has been a proliferation of literary festivals in recent decades, with more than 450 held annually in the UK and Australia alone. These festivals operate as tastemakers shaping cultural consumption; as educational and policy projects; as instantiations, representations, and celebrations of literary communities; and as cultural products in their own right. As such they strongly influence how literary culture is produced, circulates and is experienced by readers in the twenty-first century. This book explores how audiences engage with literary festivals, and analyses these festivals’ relationship to local and digital literary communities, to the creative industries focus of contemporary cultural policy, and to the broader literary field. The relationship between literary festivals and these configuring forces is illustrated with in-depth case studies of the Edinburgh International Book Festival, the Port Eliot Festival, the Melbourne Writers Festival, the Emerging Writers’ Festival, and the Clunes Booktown Festival.
