In Guarani Linguistics in the 21st Century Bruno Estigarribia and Justin Pinta bring together a series of state-of-the-art linguistic studies of the Guarani language. Guarani is the only indigenous language of the Americas that is spoken by a non-indigenous majority. In 1992, it achieved official status in Paraguay, on a par with Spanish. Current language planning efforts focus on its standardization for use in education, administration, science, and technology. In this context, it is of paramount importance to have a solid understanding of Guarani that is well-grounded in modern linguistic theory. This volume aims to fulfil that role and spur further research of this important South American language.

This ethnographic study is a revisionist view of the most significant and widely known mission system in Latin America—that of the Jesuit missions to the Guaraní Indians, who inhabited the border regions of Paraguay, Argentina, and Brazil. It traces in detail the process of Indian adaptation to Spanish colonialism from the sixteenth through the early nineteenth centuries. The book demonstrates conclusively that the Guaraní were as instrumental in determining their destinies as were the Catholic Church and Spanish bureaucrats. They were neither passive victims of Spanish colonialism nor innocent “children” of the jungle, but important actors who shaped fundamentally the history of the Río de la Plata region. The Guaraní responded to European contact according to the dynamics of their own culture, their individual interests and experiences, and the changing political, economic, and social realities of the late Bourbon period.

This book is an assembly of several accounts from the residents of the Guarani tribe located in São Paulo, Brazil. They are an invisible group, and their existence is challenged on a daily basis. I lived in São Paulo for twenty-three years, and I didn't know there was a tribe of Guarani just a few kilometers from where I lived. "The Guarani were one of the first peoples contacted after Europeans arrived in South America around 500 years ago. In Brazil, there are today around 51,000 Guarani living in seven states, making them the country's most numerous tribe. Many others live in neighboring Paraguay, Bolivia, and Argentina." This group of approximately 900 people is located at the foothills of Pico do Jaraguá about thirty minutes from the center of São Paulo, Brazil. For the Guarani, the Jaraguá is a sacred location. The area they inhabit is equivalent to two soccer fields. Needless to say, this is a very small space and not appropriate to provide them with a sustainable living. For more than 500 years, since the arrival of the Portuguese in Brazil, the Indigenous of the country have struggled with preserving their culture and way of living. Historically, they have relied on fishing and agriculture to maintain their lifestyle. They are not able to do this at the moment where they live, and this impediment is creating a visible impact in their quality of life. The location of the Pico do Jaraguá is highly desired by several developers in the area. There is a large park adjacent to the peak, and these builders want to take possession of the Land occupied by the Guarani to build high-end structures. The Guarani live in abject poverty, devoid of running water, sewage systems, and adequate housing. Many of them work outside of the tribal group, but they rely on donations for their livelihood. I met several people from the tribe a few years ago when I worked with a group of architects that built them dry toilets. At that time, I found out about this book, and since then, I had the desire to translate it into English, so others could also know about the struggles of this group of people. The intention in translating the book is for all to learn what I learned from them during the time I got more familiar with their lifestyle and way of being. For example, for the Indigenous population, the notion of Land ownership is a foreign concept. They believe that the Land belongs to all of us and that we are all part of it. There is a profound respect for all sentient beings as they are all part of the whole. I invite you to read through these perspectives and get a sense of how it is to be an Indigenous person in Brazil and know the trials and challenges faced by each one of them on a daily basis.
