What would you do if you witnessed your best friend, an innocent childs murder? Would you remain idle, overcome by fear and not act, or would you go against a city of people who have become numb to justice? Would you ignore your own well fare and risk everything to avenge his death? Please follow me into the life of a woman, Pamela Lorella, who is tortured by these questions and is faced by this dilemma in my novel, Dark corners. Pamela Lorella is relegated to live in a poor neighborhood by her father Aldo, who divorced her mother Maria, and left Pam to work at his bakery, La Favella, managed by his brother, the ruthless Don Tonino, who treats Pam with cruelty. Pam witnesses the murder of her young friend, the little Ciccio, a beggar boy who lives in her neighborhood. She is overcome by grief for his loss and fights to keep her sanity. She later on meets a handsome young man, Ferdinand, the aid to the Ambassador of the French Embassy in Palermo. They fall in love but inevitably have to deal with Gertrude, Ferdinands cruel and severe mother. He tries to help Pam in her search for justice but she is submersed in a whirlwind of events that try her spirit.

Mafiopoli written by Sanne de Boer and has been published by Hachette UK this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-06-20 with True Crime categories.

'Part memoir, part shoe leather investigative journalism, Mafiopoli is a vital exploration of how organised crime takes hold of a society from the bottom up and spreads around the world.' -Miles Johnson, author of Chasing Shadows 'Beautifully written, excellently researched.' -Mick Van Wely The 'Ndrangheta mafia is one of the most powerful criminal organizations in the world. Bound together by blood ties, sworn to a code of silence and steeped in religious ritual, they are the force behind a litany of violence and corruption. In Mafiopoli, journalist Sanne De Boer takes us deep inside this extraordinary and ascendant criminal group. In 2006, de Boer moved from Amsterdam to coastal Calabria, won over by the region's beauty and the warm village community. But when a car was set alight in the dead of night and, soon after, two men were shot dead, she began to see a darker side to her quiet, idyllic neighbourhood, kindling a strong desire to know more about what - or who - was behind these frequent crimes. MAFIOPOLI is an engrossing insight into a brutal criminal organization. As Sanne de Boer pieces together the mysterious events and violence marring her new home, she dives headfirst into figuring out who the 'Ndrangheta are, and how they became such a dominant force. She speaks to people intimately connected to the 'Ndrangheta, explores the mafia's links throughout Europe and beyond, and gets to grips with exactly why all our lives are, in shocking ways, affected by their reign.

Extra Virginity written by Tom Mueller and has been published by Atlantic Books Ltd this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-07-03 with History categories.

The best oils are made by authentic artist-craftsmen, who marry centuries-old agricultural wisdom with cutting-edge extraction technology, and now produce the finest oils in history. However, these producers are being steadily driven from the market: extra-virgin olive oil is difficult and expensive to make, yet alarmingly easy to adulterate. Skilled oil criminals are flooding the market with low-cost, faux extra-virgins, reaping rich profits and undercutting honest producers, whilst authorities in Italy, the US and elsewhere turn a blind eye. From the feisty pugliese woman of sixty struggling to keep the family business afloat to her industrialist neighbour who has allegedly grown wealthy on counterfeit oil, to Benedictine monks in Western Australia and poker-playing agriculture barons in northern California who make this ancient foodstuff in New World ways, Mueller distils the passions and life stories of oil producers, and explores the conflict, culinary vitality and cultural importance of great olive oil.

For many priests today, the sense of challenge is great. Some feel caught between an old order of pre-Vatican II times and an attempted new post-conciliar order. What lies behind our selection is the conviction that it is above all in a life of communion with others, understood and lived out in a robust spirituality of communion, that priests can find new hope and strength as they interrelate with their brother priests, with their bishops and with all who pass them by, moment by moment, in their life and ministry. Includes reflections by: Saint Augustine, Hans Urs von Balthasar, Benedict XVI, Helder Camara, Avery Dulles, Richard R. Gaillardetz, Gregory the Great, Basil Hume, John Paul II, Chiara Lubich, Karl Rahner, Fulton Sheen, Edith Stein, Mother Teresa, Jean Marie Vianney, and many others.

Thinking Childhood And Time written by Walter Omar Kohan and has been published by Rowman & Littlefield this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-10-06 with Philosophy categories.

Thinking, Childhood, and Time: Contemporary Perspectives on the Politics of Education is an interdisciplinary exploration of the notion of childhood and its place in a philosophical education. Contributors consider children’s experiences of time, space, embodiment, and thinking. By acknowledging Hannah Arendt’s notion that every child brings a new beginning into the world, they address the question of how educators can be more responsive to the Otherness that childhood offers, while assuming that most educational models follow either a chronological model of child development or view children as human beings that are lacking. The contributors explore childhood as a philosophical concept in children, adults, and even beyond human beings—Childhood as a (forgotten) dimension of the world. Contributors also argue that a pedagogy that does not aim for an “exodus of childhood,” but rather responds to the arrival of a new human being responsibly (dialogically), fosters a deeper appreciation of the newness that children bring in order to sensitize us for our own Childhood as adults as well and allow us to welcome other forms of childhood in the world. As a whole, this book argues that the experience of natality, such as the beginning of life, is not chronologically determined, but rather can occur more than once in a human life and beyond. Scholars of philosophy, education, psychology, and childhood studies will find this book particularly useful.

This edited volume explores the role of arts and meditation within educational settings, and looks in particular at the preventive and developmental function of the arts in educational contexts through different theoretical perspectives. Encompassing research from an array of disciplines including theatre, psychology, neuroscience, music, psychiatry, and mindfulness, the book draws insights relevant to a broad spectrum of interdisciplinary fields. Chapters are divided into thematic sections, each outlining praxes and emphasising how educating within and through the arts can provide tools for critical thinking, creativity and a sense of agency, consequently fulfilling the need of well-being and contributing towards human flourishing. Ultimately, the book focuses on the role the arts have played in our understanding of physical and mental health, and demonstrates the new-found significance of the discipline in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. With its interdisciplinary and timely nature, this book will be essential reading for scholars, academics, and post-graduate researchers in the field of arts education, creative therapies, neuroscience, psychology, and mindfulness.
