Pelle is still just a young boy when his father decides to move them from Sweden to the Danish island of Bornholm in search of riches. Those riches—of course—being nonexistent, they fall into the life of farm laborers. As Pelle grows up among the other lowly and poor residents of the island, their cares and worries seep into him, and he finds himself part of a greater struggle for their dignity. Pelle the Conqueror has been compared to Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables in its themes and scope. Nexø had become involved in the Social Democratic movement in Denmark that flourished after the turn of the 19th century, and this work closely follows his journalistic observations of the struggles of the people. It was published in four books between 1906 and 1910, and was immensely popular; the first book in particular is still widely read in Danish schools, and was made in to an award-winning 1987 film starring Max von Sydow as Father Lasse. In this Standard Ebooks edition books one and four are translated by Jesse Muir, while books two and three are translated by Bernard Miall. Sophie Margrethe Juliane Breum, 1870-1935, var en dansk forfatter – bedst husket for sin roman "Jul i Købmandsgaarden" fra 1917, der året efter hendes død blev til et teaterstykke og i 1951 filmatiseret under titlen "Fra den gamle Købmandsgaard". Sophie Breum drømte allerede som barn om at blive forfatter, hvor hun som datter af velhavende forældre gik i skolen på byens bedste privatskole. Efterfølgende rejste hun fra Odense til København og fik privat undervisning i litteratur, filosofi og kunst. Da hun vendte hjem, blev hun lærer på sin gamle privatskole og skrev samtidigt artikler til diverse aviser og blade som f.eks. Fyens Tidende, Illustreret Tidende og Husmoderens Blad. Desuden var hun medlem af Dansk Kvindesamfund. Litteraturkritikeren Vilhelm Andersen opmuntrede hende dog til at gøre noget ud af forfatterkarrieren, og i 1900 debuterede hun som skønlitterær forfatter med novellesamlingen "Hyld og Humle". Derudover skrev hun digte og fortællinger for børn, var redaktør og forordsskriver på diverse udgivelser samt oversætter. Breum boede indtil sin død sammen med maleren Anna Elisabeth Munch, grandkusine til Edvard Munch, og illustrerede flere af Sophie Breums bøger.

Estrid Ott (1900-1967) var en dansk forfatter og journalist, der blev særligt kendt for sin store produktion af børnebøger. Estrid Ott debuterede i 1923. Det blev en noget anderledes debut, da bogen blev til i samarbejde med moren Olga Ott. Estrid Ott blev uddannet journalist ved Vestjyllands Folkeblad, og fik senere ansættelse ved Berlingske Tidendes udenrigsredaktion. I jobbet som korrespondent dækkede hun vinterkrigen mellem Finland og Sovjet i 1939-40. Inspirationen fra Finland og andre nordlige egne er til at mærke i Estrid Otts forfatterskab, hvor flere af bøgerne finder sted i Lapland, på Svalbard eller i Grønland, hvor hun også boede for en periode. Estrid Ott nåede at skrive mange bøger, førend hun fik sit egentlig gennembrud med bogserien om Chico, der er et portugisisk gadebarn. Første bind i serien "Chicos lange vandring" vandt Kulturministeriets børnebogspris i 1958. Estrid Ott har udgivet en række bøger under pseudonymet Magnus Moen.
