This is a complete, year-long programming guide that shows librarians how to integrate nonfiction and poetry into storytime for preschool children in order to build literacy skills and overall knowledge. The right nonfiction titles—ones with colorful photographs and facts that are interesting to young imaginations—give librarians an opportunity to connect with children who are yearning for "true stuff." Presenting poetry in storytime encourages a love of language and the chance to play with words. Written by authors with a combined 25 years of experience working with children and books in a library setting, Get Real With Storytime: 52 Weeks of Early Literacy Programming goes far beyond the typical storytime resource book by providing books and great ideas for using nonfiction and poetry with preschool children. This book provides a complete, year-long programming guide for librarians who work with preschool children in public libraries and school librarians who run special programs for preschoolers as well as parents, childcare providers, and camp counselors. Each of the 52 broad storytime topics (one for each week of the year) includes a sample storytime featuring an opening poem; a nonfiction title; picture books; songs, rhymes, or fingerplays; and a follow-up activity. Early literacy tips that are based on the authors' extensive experience and the principles of Every Child Ready to Read (ECRR) are presented throughout the book.

In this engaging memoir, retired Pittsburgh public servant C.A. (Chuck) Peters tells the captivating story of his ardent, lifelong love of and "undistinguished" service in the United States Marine Corps. His affair started when he was a "Junior Marine" during World War Two in a little Ohio River town, continued through his commissioning as a second lieutenant in March of 1956 and discharge as a reserve captain in 1969. While attending Thiel College in Greenville, Pennsylvania, Peters endeavored to enlist in the Corps' Platoon Leaders Course only to be rejected for poor eyesight. A year later he tried again, and through a combination of chart memorization and lowered standards, he was accepted. After surviving the grueling twelve-week PLC selection process, Peters, in March 1956, reported to the Corps' six-month-long Basic School at Quantico, Virginia. Once there he muddled through and in October of 1956 joined the famed First Marine Division in California where he experienced peacetime active service with the Marines. He met his future wife and love of his life, Georgina Chamberlain, at Thiel College. They were wed in July of 1957, over the strenuous objections of both families, and remained happily married until her untimely death in December of 1999. I NEVER HAD TO DUCK reveals Peters' love of the Marine Corps through true stories of his adventures in the storied Corps. But he also weaves tales of friends and acquaintances who served as Marines who did have to duck.

A case of murder without a corpse. A murder takes place in the dean’s office of a law school, and the perpetrator, wearing a Donald Duck mask, flees after throwing his pistol to Dean Ansari. When the dean’s secretary walks into the office, she sees Ansari standing over the body, gun in hand, and accuses him of murder. Giving a flimsy excuse, the dean vanishes. After a fruitless search for him, his secretary returns to discover that the body is gone. Only blood on the carpet remains. In a matter of minutes, three people have disappeared. Thinking he might be wrongly convicted of a heinous crime, Dean Ansari escapes, panic-stricken, to India – the farthest place in his imagination. However, he leaves careless clues, and Detective Joe Walsh is able to trace him to Mumbai. He and the dean meet there and, not recognising each other, become friends. During this time, Ansari falls in love with a Chinese courtesan who steals his money on orders from her pimp, Raji Rau. When the penniless dean realises he must leave again, he turns to her for help. They flee together, Ansari clueless that her generous offer to pay for their expenses is actually with his own money. Their escape is hardly the end of the dean’s troubles. Other mishaps occur, and perplexing questions remain: Who was the person in the Donald Duck mask? Was there a murder? If so, what happened to the body? Does Joe Walsh ever catch up with Dean Ansari? And, of course, what becomes of the budding romance between him and the Chinese courtesan?

Bullets to Bandages: Life Inside the Israel Defense Forces The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) is a renowned fighting force. It has defended a young vulnerable country from repeated attacks. In the process, it has produced great generals and statesmen. Bullets to Bandages is set in the late 1970s, at a time when many Western armies viewed the IDF as a heroic and idealistic force. Bullets to Bandages explores the daily life inside the Israel Defense Forces. These are true stories that center on the experiences of four Israeli soldiersme and three close friendsand provide the reader with an intimate view of life in the Israeli army, the meaning of army friendships, and our own coming-of-age. Life in the IDF is in many ways similar to other armies with a lot of chicken shitannoying military nonsense. Good shoe-polishing skills are valued over combat readiness. Soldiers are chronically sleep-deprived, often standing for midnight inspections and enduring nightlong stretcher marches. And yet there is a more humane side. Everyone, regardless of rank, is addressed by his or her first name. Commanders lead by example, not by threat. Beneath the uniform, soldiers are eighteen- to twenty-one-year-old men and women, still fighting acne and constantly fantasizing about sex. You will witness the induction experience, which transformed us from teenagers into serial numbers. Other experiences included basic training (paratrooping, artillery, and air force), with the unique traditions of each corps. We evolved from new recruits, to sergeant-major slaves, to combat medic students, and finally to commanders. Along the way, we internalized, accepted, and eventually perpetuated the IDFs traditions. Life in the Israel Defense Forces is not always fun. The physical hardships are real, and the stress challenges your resolve and morale. As young men, we did not verbally express our feelings, which were often tainted by our raging hormones, but broadcasted them through our actions. Humor and friendship allowed us to thrive in this environment. We matured and ultimately put our hearts and souls into the Israel Defense Forces, and this is the true secret behind the IDFs success.
